Fenix5 Pool Swim Intervals

Have used Fenix3 and now Fenix5 for running for several years, but just started trying to use for pool swimming.  No matter what settings I try I can't get the POOL SWIM activity to automatically record intervals.  I have the activity pool length set to 25 meters, swim stroke detection on,  and an alert set for 2 lengths, but every swim shows up as a single interval.  I understand that I could stop after every two lengths and press the lap button twice, but my hope was that I could do a continuous swim, changing strokes every two lengths and have the device automatically record each two lengths as an interval with its own statistics.  That way I could compare my stroke performance.  Is this impossible or am I doing something wrong?

  • You can do it but you need to setup a workout on Garmin connect for that.

Create a new workout, set the interval distance and stroke (or leave any stroke so the watch will detect what you are doing). Add as many intervals as you want. Make sure there is no rest or lap button press set between the sets so it will automatically go to the next set, or set a small rest time.

Upload the workout to your watch and have a nice swim!

Alternatively I think you should be able to see your data for each 25m on the Garmin connect website (wether you use a workout or not)

    Hope this helps!

  • When you turn at the end of the pool you have to start the next lap with some force to get the watch to "see" the lap. AFAIK the watch uses the accelerometer to detect the beginning of the New lap.

Thank you for the suggestion.  I will try it, but it seems like more trouble than should be necessary.  I have been unable to find the 25 meter breakdown on the website but will take another look.

Yes, I've experienced that but was holding back my problems in that regard in order to reduce the complexity of my post.  My swim reports show a total distance that is "mostly" accurate.  I do get "false turns" (and thus extra distance) recorded, but the error is usually in the direction of too many lengths rather than too few.  The device detects that I'm turning (sometimes even when I don't) it's just not breaking the calculated distance down into the reporting intervals that I would like.

  • Here's a gif showing you how to check your lengths on connect (on the web not on mobile):

if you miss a length you can also correct your FIT file on this website www.swimmingwatchtools.com

  • I swim with my Fenix 5 often.  I recommend the following workflow.

Enter water.  Press Start and get swimming.

Do as many lengths of any styles you want. When you stop and take a rest, press lap.

When ready to swim some more, press Lap and get swimming.

When you leave the water, press Stop and then Save.
