any best practice for direct- nav on water?

when paddling on water using fenix 5x , I just want to navigate via several waypoints but still be flexible using my route. Using direct navigationwith  the fenix doesn't give correct info when I don't follow that straightline course. And also doesn't give info about next waypoint, only destination.

Is there anyone else who uses his fenix for navigation on water (maybe kayaking)  who has found a good solution for navigating?

Now my old e-trex works better, but I rather have no outdoor GPS on my deck during paddling. No my fenix best way is by navigating to only 1 waypoint and after that select the next one manually,

but still, when I'm off course (due to tidal currents, shallow water)  ETA is not correct anymore.. Only the pointer is correct. Is there a better way?
