I'll start by saying I am not crazy into fitness like most of the Fenix wearers seem to be, but it is such a cool watch I still want one (I have since the Fenix 3).  I'm just not sure if I should bother and if so, which one?

I definitely want a device that i can use to track my daily activity as accurately as possible as my last device (a Chinese brand  fitness band gave up on me).  In terms of my activity, I have a desk job, but i try to walk as much as possible, I ride my bike to work generally 3 times per week (about 35km per day), and I like to backcountry camp in Ontario a few weekends per year where a decent amount of hiking is done.

I would love to just go and grab a Fenix 6 and be done with it, however the price (sapphire one is $715CAD) is stopping me.

I see my options as

Vivoactive 3 for $150CAD - I am sure will basically do everything I want and its cheap enough that I wouldn't feel too guilty about upgrading to a Fenix if I still want to at some point.  I am just not crazy about the touchscreen or the battery life

Instinct for $280CAD - I am not sure if this is the type of watch I should be wearing to work, plus for $70CAD more I can get a Fenix 5.

Fenix 5 non sapphire for $350CAD - no maps which I thought would be useful for my camping.  But my main concern is I was reading about a lot of issues with the fenix 5 however most seemed to be when the device first came out.  Have most of these issues been resolved?  Some people were saying the 5 plus is what the 5 should have been.

Thanks for any help.

John

  • Your experience will vary, but my thoughts are below. TLDR - I would look at the F5 in your shoes. Is it overkill? Yes. But see below.

    • Personally for me, coming from a fitbit ionic, using buttons instead of a touchscreen has made exercise logging simpler and easier for me. Your mileage may vary.
    • The downside of the instinct is that the screen is not as customizable as the VA3 or F5 - doesn't support CIQ watch faces, for example.

As for issues, I've had a F5S for about a year and I haven't had any issues (aside from treadmill calibration, but that's fixed in the newest update.) I think most of the issues had to do with connecting accessories (foot pods, etc.) to the watch. Not sure if those are fixed, or if that's a concern for you.
