Battery saving options?

As far as I understand, the main reason for improved battery time on the Fenix 6 is the possibility to select different profiles, eg. turn heart rate sensor off.

Personally I don't need to monitor my heart rate during working hours.

I hope this feature will be released to Fenix 5, such that the battery time will improve and we can save a bit of energy to make Greta Thunberg happy.

  • Selecting profiles in and of itself is not critical -- what matters is what functions are activated. Most can be deactivated. You can run tests yourself to determine how much energy is being used for xyz.

AFAIK, GPS, frequently updated watch face (like a second hand or digital refresh), and backlight frequency and intensity (e.g. triggered by motion) have a measurable impact. GPS in particular.

For a while I've tried turning bluetooth off -- no discernable improvement. Same with HRM (albeit it was in auto mode and I wasn't wearing the watch on my wrist). So now both are always on and I get 14+ days which include several activities and a couple of hours of GPS.

Install a battery monitor such as this one and see if HRM on/off makes such a difference that you'll want to turn if off.
