5S: Mass storage mode when charging from powerbank broke activity

Recently, I had an activity (walking, > 90 km, > 18h). Since the battery life is quite limited, I charged the watch during almost every break from Xiaomi powerbank PLM02ZM. However, after the 9th break, I noticed that the watch screen looked like it was connected to a computer in mass storage mode. After disconnecting, I had realized that the activity is stopped and I cannot continue it.

Do you have any idea why this has happened? What can I do to prevent it the next time?

  • Aah, mine connects to computer thinking its a charger due to corroded charge pins...

Maybe data pins shortcutted someway, or inside the powerbank unit... Weren't there any options to continue the activity?

Go Settings > System > USB Mode and set it as Garmin, it won't switch to mass storage momde without asking.

  • Shorted PINs could cause the watch confuse charger and computer, but in the other way – shorted data pins look like a legacy charger.

No, there was not any option to continue.

Thanks for pointing the USB mode out. This mode seems to be much safer in such cases.
