Back To Start Tracback vs Route and trail names

Ok, so I was on a hike recently following an established trail, while recording a Hike activity. When I got to the turn around point, I selected "Back To Start" and then either selected TracBack or Route but I can't remember which. The navigation provided the usual distance to the next turn but I was very pleasantly surprised to see that the watch was also able to figure out which trail I was on! When I reached an intersection with a different trail, it knew the name of that one too.

I did another Hike on another trail, except this time when I turned around I definitely selected Route. The navigation did not know what trail I was on but provided the distance to the next turn.

So a few questions:

What is the difference between Tracback and Route?

Why does the watch sometimes know what trail I'm on? Is there anything I can do to have the watch always know?

Is there any way I can start a Hike with the watch aware of what trail I'm on without loading a predefined course onto it from a computer? Is it possible to pick a point on the topographic map and navigate there based on the most reasonable trail?
