Fenix 5S: Data storage period

My phone needs a warranty repair and it might take up to 30 days. This could mean that my Fenix 5S will not be synced for this period. What is the limit for data storage (steps, HR, stress, activities…)? Do I risk some data not being recorded? I have heard about such an issue with Vivoactive 3 after 7 days, but Fenix 5S might be different…

  • Use a different phone. Don't you have a few old ones in a drawer?

  • Or a pc/mac with Garmin Express...

  • It has 64 MB of memory and I think it'll be enough for 30 days of data, but it really depends on how many activities you do and how much time and memory it takes and with what settings and additional fields.
You can delete the previously synced activities from the watch and increase the empty space. My F5X has 49 MB and 199 activities on storage since November 2018. So deleting some activities can give you a lot of space for new ones. Also unused watchfaces and apps, loaded routes can be deleted if needed too.

  • Well, this is kind of half solution, but I will probably do sort of that. There is one of my past phones that still gets security updates. But I gave it to my mom to replace her Nokia C2 01 Excavator Edition… So, I will probably use a feature phone for some weeks.

My mom seems to agree that I create a separate user account on her phone for that purpose. This would allow to sync sometimes, but probably not every day…

  • Garmin Express might be generally an option, but I would have to use some kind of USBIP solution to connect the watches to the Windows VM. This is probably feasible, but potentially troublesome.

  • Currently, I see 55 MiB total, 19 MiB used and 37 MiB available. And I can probably free 12 MiB by deleting gmapsupp.img, which is likely useless on this watch and I believe this was copied there by me when believing there was some maps support. So, there seems to be enough space and activities will be likely kept. The missing part are steps/sleep/etc. There is likely enough space even for them, but I wonder if there is some similar limit to Vivoactive 3.
