The hiking app probably won't show an appropriate calorie burn since snowshoeing is significantly more difficult. Maybe the XC ski app would be better?

What specifically are you after? I Snowshoe run/race but just use a trail run activity. I don't use a normal run activity as this will seriously drop your VO2Max estimate. I'm not sure the Calorie burn is impacted - thought it was really just based on HR (could be wrong but don't use calories). Anything that tries to link pace/speed to energy (HR) will be off as you know.
Thanks for your reply. I'd like to have moderately accurate values for calorie burn, VO2Max, and Aerobic Training Effect. I don't race. This is just for my own knowledge. I also don't want to get the nasty gram from my watch that tells me I'm underperforming based on my heart rate vs speed ;) Maybe even the climbing app would be better since most of my snowshoeing routes are up and down mountains.
VO2 is only calculated with the running and cycling activities.
yes, kinda what I implied in my reply but without being specific enough. Way back I was one of the many who pushed to have a way to turn off VO2Max calculations for certain activity types (Garmin solution was to limit it to run and cycling activities). The algorithm for VO2Max needs flat, consistent effort where HR and pace can be compared (simplification here). Any activity that makes it look like you are working harder but not going as fast will drop your VO2Max values - trail races with bad footing, snowshoe running where the effort can be 1.5 to 2 times that for running, etc.
I didn't realize that VO2Max was only calculated on running and cycling activities. I'm still new to using some of the functions on my 5S so thanks for helping me understand. As far as the calorie burn and Aerobic TE, I guess I'll experiment a little with XC Ski vs Climbing vs Hiking on the same route to see how or if the values differ.
