How do you disable automatic update? (v. 14.1 battery drain problem)

Before I was hit with the automatic update to v. 14.1, i was getting about 3-5% per day drain if no activities.  Since the update, i now get around 20% per day drain, with no activities.

I see on this Forum this is a known issue, and that Garmin appears to be ignoring it. I do have the optical heart rate monitor on, and it seems that many believe this is the culprit. Have not experimented with turning it off yet. But, then i would be disabling one  of the features that i bought the watch for, so that does not seem right to me.

I saw one reference in a post to "disable automatic update". Can somebody explain how to do that? Once there is some solution to this issue from Garmin, i'd like to disable automatic update and never update again unless i have a specific issue that i know of.  You never know what will be torpedoed by an update.

Agree with the comments that Garmin seems to have a very poor software process with inadequate testing. Very distressing to buy an expensive item and then find that the company behind it doesn't bother to test software before releasing it.
