Seriously, What The Floor? [Rant]

I've been standing still for the last 75 minutes and the F5X says I've just completed my floor target for the day!

Now I have a sports watch that doesn't track steps right, doesn't track floors right, doesn't track HR right, doesn't show distance to destination while navigating. And these are the bugs Garmin has confirmed knowing about on this forum as being widespread. I won't even go into individual cases. If didn't want these basicist of things I would've bought a £5 Mickey Mouse watch not a £850 frustration black hole.

  • Well you forgot to mention that this is only one side of the hole fun. The other side is the buggy Garmin Connect software with broken Livetrack, worse UI for  training and sleep details, buggy aero and anaerob results and every release it gets worse...

But within the next 2 weeks the Fenix 6 will be launched. Just spend another 1.000$ and everything will be perfect Grin

  • Ambient air pressure changes throughout the day. If the fact that ambient air pressure is not stable does your head in, go to  Settings> Sensors> Barometer> Watch Mode> and set it to Barometer, then the watch will assume changes are due to ambient air pressure rather than elevation, unless there is other information to the contrary (eg. GPS).

The wrist is great place to view information, but it is a poor place to measure HR (an extremity with poor blood supply). OHR doesn't work for everyone, but it is definitely worth looking at watch positioning and placement. The band should be snug, and positioned high on the wrist, well away from the wrist bone (this is a fair bit higher than most people are used to wearing a watch). Personally, I find I have to wear the band 1-2 notches tighter for running than I do for 24/7 monitoring.

And have a look at the Dist. Remaining datafield (under the Navigation datafields).

Wow, good job. You got 3 out of 3 assumptions wrong, that's what actually does my head in!

You assumed I was standing outside with variable ambient pressure. No, I was standing inside the building at my work desk.

You assumed either I've never used a wrist HR monitor before and didn't know the short comings or I actually rely on a watch for accurate data. You were wrong again. Not my first watch and not my first days with this one either. I've watched continuously as accuracy degraded with each update.

And yet wrong again. Look at the forum there are 3 threads open regarding the distance to waypoint or destination b of saved location which garmin has confirmed and said they are looking into.

  • Okay - I get you're in rant mode, but unless you're standing inside a pressure chamber, your air pressure changes inside with the outside air pressure, even when you're standing or even sitting on your desk. Also, expecting your comeback: a closed window won't protect you from that Slight smile

  • I am climbing stairs while running downhill. I am climbing stairs while running at sea level. Literally at sea level, on the beach.

  • jup, when climbing about 8 - 10 floors in the morning in my house (with high ceilings), my fenix sees about 0 - 2 floors. while sitting (most of the time) or walking in my office in a basement without stairs i make about 10 - 20 floors during work.

i don't look at the floors climbed anymore - it's a random generator. my daily goal is reached at 1 floor and that's it.

the thing why i am annoyed by the ultra bad floor counter is, that this is one of the very few metrics of the fenix, one knows if it is right or wrong. what do you think how reliable the values are of measurements you can't proof (like sleep quality, stress, calories and more)?

Someone didn't research a product before spending £850. First port of call before buying my Fenix 5 was to check these forums and other reviews. As others have said, OHR is pretty inaccurate across all wearables. That's a well known fact. Luckily with Garmin, you have the option to pair up with an external chest strap. Buy a Huawei Watch GT for example and you cant, you're stuck with wrist based monitoring. Same goes for many others. I haven't personally experienced floor climbing whilst standing still, so clearly have a faulty unit. So do what others do and contact Garmin for a replacement. I'm sure they'll help you out.
