Tracking elevation and route of long hikes

Hi,

Im about to start a hike of few days where each day is about 10 hours walk.

I was wondering if there is some mode in Fenix 5s that can do the following:

1) Record the route I went (path + altitude)

2) Not consume battery as navigate mode

I uploaded gpx files of the hike I plan to go but still I had like somehow to be able to look on my phone in the end of everyday to see how much I actually went/climbed.

Thank you

    Hi,

I'm not a specialist of multi-day hikes, but personally, I would save every day as a single track. Of cause, It's possible to stop the tracking over night and continue in the morning (option "continue later" - I often did it, but only on one-day trips with some breaks), but IMHO it's much to dangerous during multy-day hikes, to loose everything. (I'm not sure, but I think not all data will continue. Some data start from the beginning, at least on the watch).

And you can see the daily tracks on your phone.

In case you need a single track, it's possible to combine all tracks afterwards.

Regarding 1.) Yes, of cause it's possible

Regarding 2.) GPS is draining the battery, also only during walking. You should take a power bank to have additional power, in case of battery level is too low.

EDIT: BTW: Take a kook at the app "HikeFild". I like it, as all data are on 1 screen. Look here

  • I'm doing long hikes, with 10 hours, 10-12 days. I'm using build-in hiking app with GPS mode Glonass+GPS. My fenix 5x battery is enough for such long days, but you have to charge it daily, such a long hike day will eat about 70-80% of the battery. Each day is saved as separate activity and then (if there internet connection, that is very strange) you can see your day statistics in the app.

  • GPS+GLONASS (or GPS+Galileo) consumes about 40% more battery than GPS alone. If you are doing a multi-day hike, then GPS alone might be a better option.

  • Maybe, but in some canyons this provides less drifting points.

How do I choose which gps to use? All I see is if gps is green color or red.

: fenix 5X has a much lager battery than fenix 5S. Normally (according to specification) also 10h should work with 5S, but I havn't tested the maximum time till shutdown...

Question: You wrote " Each day is saved as separate activity". What does this mean exactly?

    a) Do you finish ("save") the hiking manually every day (this is, what I would prefere), or

    b) Do you select "continue later", and nevertheless Garmin Connect saves automatically each day???

: Someone mentioned (sometime ago, somewehere here in old forum), that GPS+Galileo doesn't drain the battery very much, but GPS+Glonass does... I don't know and it also seems illogical, but have you tested personally?

  • At the end of day hike, I stop the activity and save it. And next day I start new activity.
