Custom Heart Rate Zones does not work in Fenix 5?

Hi!

I have set custom heart rate zones in Garmin Connect and which is synchronized to my Fenix 5. They are based on percent of max heart rate (200) and have the following limits: 60%, 73%, 83%, 88% and 93%. When I run a defined workout the Fenix 5 shows zone 3.5 for a heart rate of 166, but the correct value should be 3.0 since zone 3 starts at 166. When the activity is imported into Garmin Connect, the same error is shown there: When I look at the time in zones table: Z3 (zone 3) is defined as 159-169, and not as 166-176 which is what I have defined. The value of 3.5 shown in the watch correspond to this "wrong" Zone 3 definition. Is this a bug? Or what can I do get the Fenix 5 and Garmin Connnect to show the correct zone values?

Thanks,

Arne

  • A couple of potential causes here.

    1. Check carefully that your zones and zone calculation method is consistent across all of Garmin Connect, Garmin Connect Mobile AND your watch. If they are not, incorrect zones can be re-imported at the next sync.

    2. Check tany sport-specific HR zones are being applied as you want them.

  • I have had the same "issue" and I found the solution. In Garmin Connect Mobile, you MUST set your max heart rate for each activity not only for the "heart tab". So in the "Running tab" set your max heart rate and it will work next time.

On the screenshot there are 4 tabs : the "heart tab" is for all activities by default but if you have only this tab, it doenst work for a running activitie ! There are 3 others tab : run, bike and swim. You must set your max heart rate for each activity. I set the same max for all tabs...

To found this page, click on your watch icon in Garmin Connect Mobile then "user parameters" then "configure the heart rate zone"

Setting the same max HR for running, cycling and swimming is obviously your choice, but there is a difference between the three and that's why the settings are there. On average cycling is 5-10 bpm lower than your running max and swimming can be 10-17 bpm lower. Every individual is different depending how active and fit they are in each sport, so it's best to test yourself to get the best results with your training.

  • I was speaking only for me, I dont care about HR for bike and swim

  • I have been in contact with Garmin Support (in Norway) and after some debugging we limited the problem down to synchronizing custom heart rate zones for running. A workaround that works is to delete the custom heart rate zones for running, and just use the standard non-sport-specific custom heart rate zone. Then the synchronizing works.
