How to decide on correct stride length?

Hi,

After disappointing instant pace results on the fenix 5 as per many others on this forum (I wish I read these before purchasing). I’ll happily be going along at 6:30 min/mile then bam I’m doing 9:00 min/mile. After a few seconds or so it will go back to 6:30.

I decided to have a chat to Garmin about it who suggested I set my custom stride length to aid the instant pace and reduce drop outs when in built up areas. By built up areas, I mean for me it’s a couple of trees, I’m typically away from tall buildings and wooded areas.

Makes sense to try the suggestion since there’s no magical fix to a poorly made watch. However doesn’t stride length change depending on how fast I’m running? Surely entering stride length for an easy run is not going to accurately reflect my race day stride length?

I've gone back through a few of my runs and my stride length does indeed vary depending on what type of run I was doing. So so how does it work, will it work or will it just mess things up even further?

I’m starting to really miss my 235 Cry. It worked so well with none of this pace jumping malarkey.

How do others cope with say track intervals? I’ve pretty much done my 400m sprint before the fenix gets round to telling me the correct pace. On longer runs I can use average pace but doesn’t help much at the start races, I just go by feel which is often too fast.

Thanks,
