Fenix 5, corrosion on 2nd pin

Hy guys. I have a fenix 5 that after 3 months of buying had some corrosion and now look like in the image a posted. The watch was bought in august 2018. Can this be soved by waranty if there is no connexion/charging problem YET? Dont think the life expectancy of an fenix 5 is just 2-3 years... If someone on this forum is from Garmin Romania would help. Thanks!

  • My 5x has silver pins. They (5x) first came out with silver pins. We then had the issue with the data charging not working and newer models appeared with gold pins - assuming to resolve that issue. My second 5x still has the data connection issue but I never sent it back because I haven't seen the sensor cracking issue that then seemed to appear. Better the devil you know.

I started to think perhaps charging while the pins are wet or damp?

  • Does your second 5x came with the golden pins ? Did you noticed any rust on the pins that can lead to the data connection issues ?

    Thank you.

After only 2 months, my Fenix 5 also exhibits significant corrosion on the second pin. I am waiting on a replacement from REI, via their replacement policy. I wear the watch all day, work out with it everyday, and also rinse it every day. I am very dissapointed by this corrosion issue. Has anyone here had a replacement, where no corrosion occurred after a couple months or longer? Mine is a 53xxx serial number purchased this April.

I also would like to know about it. Same issue here and I am going to send next week the watch back to Garmin and get a new replacement (I already have an RMA). But I would like to know if the issue won't happen again in the future with new the watch.

  • Since it has happened two times to me, its obvious that no one can guarantee you it wont happen again as we have no official confirmation from Garmin on why the issue occurs.

  • No, silver pins on my second too. This one also exhibits the data connection issue of the first. I just decided to keep this one because I wasn't seeing the cracked sensor issue that started to crop up. As I didn't connect that often - since wifi firmware updates - I could live with the data connection issue. Not seen any corrosion on the pins either.

Seems like these issues - data connection, cracking sensors, rusty pins, are luck of the draw. Never seen any official reasons as to why any have occurred or things not to do to avoid the issues, etc.

Maybe it's better to do it via Garmin Support. I suppose they will have a way to know if the one that you are getting it doesn't have this problem, but said that had the problem with the watch that he got back from Garmin Support, so, I don't know what to think.

I have the same problem and my watch is 3 months old, I think maybe better to wait till the warranty is running out, so the second one will live longer rather than do it now.

  • Yes indeed. I am now at my third watch for almost 10 days so far and 100km running on it with no problems. Will keep you posted in case I see again the same problem.

I got the replacement and it has brown colour water on my first run. This happened 3 days after I got the replacement.
