Fenix 5, corrosion on 2nd pin

Hy guys. I have a fenix 5 that after 3 months of buying had some corrosion and now look like in the image a posted. The watch was bought in august 2018. Can this be soved by waranty if there is no connexion/charging problem YET? Dont think the life expectancy of an fenix 5 is just 2-3 years... If someone on this forum is from Garmin Romania would help. Thanks!

In this situation, changing the watch does not give anything. I can not understand it - no one can say what's going on. We will be these watches how many times to exchange? There is such a thing as a return of cash - I do not know if I will go this way next time. On the 5x watch this problem does not occur but there the contacts are golden. I also looked at the documetation of changes in software 13.30 there is no word about any voltage changes so we do not know if this is true - Someone from the GARMIN company should write what is causing and what he intends to do about it.

  • I'd like to add some more considerations about this.

There are people on another similar thread talking about gold pins instead of silver. According to this people the Fenix 5 with silver pins is an old model.

I don't know where they got this information, I only saw silver pins only on Fenix 5 and 5s: can someone confirm? Because in my understanding this is the pin scheme:

Fenix 5s Plus, Fenix 5 Plus, Fenix 5x, Fenix 5x Plus = gold pins

    Fenix 5s, Fenix 5 = silver pins

What I find strange is that the Fenix 5 is a 2017 watch, but this is emerging only very recently. That make me think there's either a bad batch around - not necessary an old one - OR they (Garmin) made something in the newest firmware that causes that problem (I'm referring to Michalis who spoke to Garmin support about this and he got the info they fix it after 11.30).

My opinion, is that the support is just shooting in the dark, (also there's no mention in the 11.30 changelog, so I guess if for the next Firmware?). let's see what's happening.

Meanwhile IMHO it's too risky to ask for a replacement immediately, since it's not clear if it's a design/production flaw or a bad batch or something else. I'll wait when there will be some more consistent infos about this.

Last thing I want is a replacement with the same flaw or a bad firmware again.

  • Ok, sounds good, thanks!

    I've seen a few watches and I think it's a good scheme:

Fenix 5s Plus, Fenix 5 Plus, Fenix 5x, Fenix 5x Plus = gold pins
    Fenix 5s, Fenix 5 = silver pins

However, I have not encountered problems with the 5s on the network. I think that a lot of people did not notice this problem just yet. Let them not know too late after the warranty

  • No charge with condition of pin is wet..

  • I have my Fenix 5 for about one month and using it mainly for running, four times a week. It has silver pins and for now pin 2 just got darker grey (the rest are shiny), but no rust yet. I wash the watch after every training. Mine is with SN 5Q104*** and according to Garmin was packed to sell 3/2019. I did a measurement using a multimeter, and there is voltage on pin 2 measured against pin 4, BUT there is also voltage measured against the metal back of the watch (back is GND).

I have a colleague with Fenix 5 plus, with golden pins and did the same measurement on his watch and there is no voltage on pin 2 measured against any adjacent pin nor the metal back of the watch.

Also the back of the fenix 5 plus watch is either not made of metal or has some none conductive surface treatment because with both multimeter probes on the back there is no conduction (short).

So not only the plating of the pins is changed.

  • I have a 5x and silver pins.  But no failure -- yet.

  • Hello, the same problem with the second contact. Rusty raid, if cleaned, it is clear that the contact is damaged. I use the clock a year, I noticed a couple of months ago. I always treated the watch with care, after running I washed it with water and wiped it dry. But the problem is probably not in the care. Posted by support team Garmin Europe. They said that watches with corrosion are usually subject to replacement, but you need to contact your local dealer. I bought the watch at the local online store, so I gave it to them according to the guarantee. But how surprised I was when I received a conclusion from a local dealer in Belarus that the watch was working. I am categorically against such a decision. Wrote a statement for an independent examination. While waiting for the result. I am glad that in other countries dealers care about their customers, we succeed in not (

  • This is unacceptable. I don't think Garmin Europe will like the response you got. Send them an email, including also pictures of your watch.

    • Unfortunately, I contacted Garmin Europe. I received the answer that I need to deal with my problem to the local dealer. It may say that replacement of the device is possible only at the discretion of the local dealer. Local dealer refused to replace the device with corrosion.
