Can’t Setup WiFi thru GCM (iOS) for Fenix 5

Hi,

My wife recently bought a Fenix 5s (sapphire, WiFi) and no matter how many times we try to setup the watch’s WiFi through the Garmin Connect app on her phone, we get a “something went wrong, please try again” message.

We've tried multiple networks, none of which are hidden by the way, but no luck.

Has anyone successfully setup a WiFi network thru the GCM app for their Fenix 5?

Thanks

  • Hi!

Yes I did...I have setup WiFi for my Fenix 5x and my wife's Forerunner 935. I don't remember quite well the process but both the phone (GCM) and the watch have to find the same WiFi network so you can pair them. It is not only through GCM if I remember correctly.

Hope his gives you a clue.

I had problems getting WIFI to connect to my 5X. Contacted Garmin Support and the tech could not assist in getting the WIFI and sent me an email concerning my router settings. I have a CenturyLink wireless modem and contacted them to check on the settings. I still could not connect, so I finally did a reset to factory setting and now can connect to WIFI. Spent over 2 hours on the phone with both companies and was able to solve my issue in 5 minutes by doing the reset. Not sure if it will work with your device, but I would suggest you give it a try. One thing about the watch is that Bluetooth needs to be deactivated in order for WIFI to connect. The watch searched for a Bluetooth connection and if not found, will attempt WIFI.

  • Thanks. They both find the same network, but can’t connect unfortunately.

  • Thanks, I’ll try turning the Bluetooth off and try again. I’m not clear on which device you reset though, the watch? Thanks again.

  • Every once in a while after an update my watch won't connect to my wifi to upload my data. The only consistent fix for me has been to connect it to my laptop and open the Garmin desktop application to make sure there is nothing else left to update.
