Scored a Fenix 5 Sapphire just now ...

So I preordered a standard 5 from REI yesterday. Today I was looking through the release date thread and someone posted a link to the Garmin Dealer site so you could check stores in your area. I thought what the hell. I called a couple local small shops and I was shocked when I asked " Did you happen to get any Fenix 5's?" He laughed and said "we actually got 1 in the mail yesterday and I just put it in the sales case its the Sapphire edition " I said hold it I am on my way.

Couple impressions

It is for sure smaller than the 3 in feel and straps is smaller. Strap is smaller width wise which I am not too keen on.
The screen is pretty damn nice. The fonts do seem bigger
The menu structure is quite a bit different will take some getting used to
The extra straps was a nice surprise

I will attach my Scosche Rythm+ for a Crossfit workout later today and post some stuff

I was not going to buy the Sapphire one, but hey since it was there.

I was confused on the bands as well. Do the normal 5 come with the extra band? Since they are charging 50 for more bands, I guess I only paid 50 more for wireless and Sapphire??

Also the charging cable is pretty short and the watch sits awkward when changing can no longer lay it flat

The normal ones don't come with the extra band, only the sapphire models.

Ok cool. Now I guess since I would have bought different bands anyways. It was a good deal. Since it has the better screen as well.

Not sold on the width of the bands though. Almost seem to narrow or something. Maybe its just different IDK

I kept looking at your pics thinking, "wow, the 5S is sure a lot smaller than the 3." Then I realized you actually got the 5! Garmin did a nice job bringing down the overall size while keeping the display size the same.

Lucky you.. I have been hunting around by calls to my local stores... nothing so far.
  • Thanks for the pics, much more manageable size but yes the strap looks a bit narrow, they should have gone for 24mm instead of 22mm. Would have made it easier for strap references too.

Same here. I have a 5S preordered but this comparison is causing me to rethink it. The 3HR was too large for me, but the 5 looks to be a nice reduction in size.

It really is. I would think anything smaller would be too small for me. This almost seems to small. But feels great on the wrist - with the exception of the clasp digs into my wrist a bit. But I have been on my jkeyboard all day

The smaller straps almost remind me of the vivoactive bands. They feel just like them
