Recalibrating Training Status after changing MaxHR

I have recently discovered that my max HR has been set ridiculously high for the last few month. I had set it to my correct max HR about a year ago following a run fitness test, but somewhere along the way it had been set to 202 and not the 189 that I had entered. I have changed the Max HR back down to 189 and now all my training status's, Vo2Max etc. are all out of whack.

Question 1: Does anybody know how my MaxHR could have changed? I could have entered it wrong but i can't see how I could have entered 202 by mistake.

Question 2: I think it's been months using the wrong MaxHR and so I'm not sure that the data the watch has is even remotely accurate. So should I simply reset and start getting new metrics again or will it catchup at some point? I have gone from barely being able to keep the training status out of recovery, to now massively overreaching with all my runs have being unproductive for weeks now.
  • 1\I assume you had the default setting of 'auto detect Max HR' and subsequently recorded an activity with a rogue HR. You can order the activity list by MaxHR to identify it. I suggest that you complete a MaxHR test.
  • In addition to TrippyZ's suggestion of the possibility of autodetect and an erroneous measurement, it is a common problem that the watch can import incorrect HR zones after a firmware update - especially if you are using the LTHR method to calculate zones. If you do make a change to your maxHR, make sure it is in Garmin Connect (preferrably the web version rather than the mobile app), as otherwise the incorrect number can be re-imported.

The VO2Max readings (and therefore TS, etc) should stabilize with the correct HR numbers - a couple of weeks data (especially if you are running multiple times per week) should be enough to stabilize readings. I'd suggest taking a look at Performance Condition graphs for recent runs to confirm this - generally PC should start positive, and gradually decline as fatigue accumulates over the course of a run. I also assume you are road running, and not transitioning to trail running as spring weather impoves?

Thank you both for your feedback.I have taken a look at all my old data and indeed there is a Max HR of 202 in there, although it was years ago, but I do suspect that was where it came from. I tend to run everyday, on the road, and I am starting to see it settle down now. All runs are still Unproductive as I am assuming that it's still catching up but hopefully soon I'll get my first Productive soon.
