Intensity Minutes data looks misleading

Hello,
Since recently (approx March) Intensity Minutes look to be strange as real activities are barely tracked while simple walk adds significant amount of active minutes. See charts attached.

Bike ride two-hours long only added 10 minutes to Intensity Minutes while easy walk added 100+ minutes.

Have you seen the same? Is that recent update or something else?

  • Thank you for post and providing some of your data, but without looking at each activity and asking a few questions it is hard to guess what could be causing the differences. When working with Intensity Minutes with other users, we have found that Understanding how Intensity Minutes Work is the best way to answer why Intensity Minutes are the way they are. One of the most important things to remember is that Intensity Minutes are not figured out the same way for everyone.
  • One of the consistent problems with updates is that it can lead to the watch importing incorrect HR zones from Garmin Connect, which then leads to incorrect Intensity Minutes.

You may want to check your HR zones in GC. And if you need to make any changes, make them there - if you do it on the watch, the incorrect zones will be re-imported at the next sync.

Thanks, I've checked this link and would like to share more data to get better understanding what has changed as I'm using garmin devices for 1+ year already and previously my intensity minutes were not that surprising :)

    See two images attached
    - one from cycling with avg HR around 120bpm (this gave me like 10 or 15 intensity minutes)
    - the other from walking and HR is around 95bpm (this gave me 100+ intensity minutes)

I'll be grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks! I've updated it today and will take a look how it changes. Indeed my Max HR was higher then it should be...

  • Hello Garmin,
since November '18 i don´t get any intensitiy minutes. The watch and GC is always showing 0. The time before i own intensity minutes even if i was walking. What´s wrong? Any idea?
  • samseisbaer To better help you, we would need to know a lot more about what you are doing and when you are expecting to see it.

Some questions I can think of off the top of my head are:
Is your device update to date?
Have you set your Max Heart? Also is it set correctly?
Are you getting Heart Rate data? If you have it turned off, are you getting steps?
What type of activity are you doing? For example, swimming activity does not provide enough data to work.
Are you doing an exercise for least a 10-minute vigorous workout? Getting that HR update.
Are you wearing the device at all times or just working out?

As you can see, it is not a simple feature. It takes a lot of data to provide you with the intensity minutes.

If you think that you are doing all those things, then I would suggest talking to a Garmin Support Expert.

This makes me think there may be an issue with the sport-specific HR zones (and with cycling in particular).
  • Well there is something else... take a look at this new observation - this was just a very lazy walk during 1h and when I checked my HR it was over 170! See the photo and the Garmin Connect screenshot from the same walk (also note MoveIQ detected it as a "walk" as it should).

So I restarted the device and then HR became 85, which is realistic.

    Please help.
Let me know if I need to send any extra info, debug info etc... I'm really disappointed that I can't rely on HR or Intensity minutes anymore...ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1476101.png
  • Same happened yesterday, this is continuous problem recently...
    Are there any options?
