Software Version 13.00

I had my first experience with new fw 13.00. Actually I am very disappointed with its tracking performance.

Below picture is belong to Tuesday workout with firmware 12.50

And this one is belong to today's workout with fw 13.00

I run on this track very often and I have never get such kind of awful performance before. Probably something is broken regarding tracking system in this new fw.

p.s: I use gps+gallileo together. ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1472948.png ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1472949.png
  • GPS satellites do drift slightly in their orbits, but GPS devices download (it takes 13 minutes over the GPS signal itself) an almanac of current orbits to account for this.

The update process of the FW erases the existing almanac, and often the first post-update activity will have lower GPS performance until it can download a new almanac. Normal GPS performance is typically restored in subsequent activities.
  • I got an 8 hour event coming I want to track. What would be the best action after this update? Should I just record 20 min of something and discard that? Or should I just go into the event and it will hit optimal conditions after its 13min in it?

Satellite positions are downloaded/updated upon syncing with the Garmin Connect app so there is no need to do anything other than use the device as you normally would (perhaps maybe force a sync a few times in the Connect Mobile app).

The last location is also erased on update, so for the sync method to work to upload the almanac, the watch needs to know where it is - ie. it has to have had a GPS fix after the update.

I'm very surprised at my last two runs after version 13: the end-of-run summary indicates surprisingly low anaerobic on a track which includes at total of about 3km strong uphill on 7.3 km total; the first run I had 3.5 aerobic and 0.2 anaerobic, the second one, 5.0 anaerobic and 0 (!) anaerobic. Given my usual performance/averages, I find this very bizarre indeed.
  • Gumbodad There is a long history of the F5 importing incorrect HR zones from Garmin Connect after a firmware update (especially if you use the LTHR method), which can lead to odd Training Effect numbers. I'd suggest checking carefully the maxHR, HR zones and zone calculation method in GC/GCM, and then syncing. (And then checking the zones on your watch to be sure that the correct zones have been imported)
