Follow route without map

Hi,

I am hoping to follow a pre planned gpx route on my 5x. I have loaded the route into a walk and by default the watch shows the route on the map.

Now I know using the map constantly kills the battery, so I was hoping to follow the route without the map, e.g. have just a line for a route and a directional arrow/distance like some other watches do.

Is there any way that this can be done on the 5x?
  • Disable all maps in the settings of the used app.

Hi. Many thanks for the suggestion. I have had a look in the walk app, but under map there does not seem to be a disable option.

I can remove the map as a data field, but then opening the walk app up and selecting the route brings the map back up....

Is it possible to provide more detailed instructions for a novice user over awed by the power of the fenix 5x?

    Thanks
  • Procedure.....
    Walk..
    walk settings..( hold up-menu button)
    configure maps...
    disable all maps....
    ::::::::::::
There maybe an older map app in the IQ store you could use also...
    Hope this helps...
You could also just switch to another screen like I do... and reference the map occasionally to preserve the battery.

I always have the map showing, why?
-It's much faster to read the course
    -TBT notifications are always late
-If a TBT notification is not very helpful, you look at the map and know immediatly where to go

It doesn't kill the battery. Today I went outside with the bike following a 27km course for 1h and 45min, the battery dropped from 80% to 70%.

I would like a feature that the watch auto switches to the map view when a TBT notification, waits for you to read it and it goes back to whatever screen you had showing.

It's odd. But under configure maps my options are...
    Worldwide DEM Basemap NR
    TopoActive Europe v3 West
    TopoActive Europe v3 East
    Garmin Cycle Map EU...

So unless I am being really dim. There is no disable option there.

I'm going to be walking for 20 to 24 hrs straight so want to manage the battery usage a little. Whilst I can charge on the move I don't want to be doing it much. Hence wanting the map of and a simpler navigation method available. I will be following a marked path, so it is just a back up aid, not my main source of navigation.

    ....
Just press start .. and the green arc will be grey... do that for all those maps you mentioned.

Oh thanks Sam, that sorted it. Never knew what those green bars indicated! Seems so obvious now.

Next question however, is it possible to change the route following screen from colours to monochrome? Is there any settings for this?

    Thanks again.
  • Unfortunately no.... you can't change the colours of the map screen to monochrome.... you can change just the GPS trace colours.

Ah OK thanks. So probably not a huge amount of battery to be saved! Many thanks for the help.
