Fenix 5x not receiving notifications when the Connect app is not running

Hi all,

I'm enjoying my 5x since 2 years now, but unfortunately I'm recently facing problems with notifications.

I just upgraded my phone to a Mate 20 Pro with Android pie (9.0).
Since then I can only get notifications into my watch if I keep the Connect application running in the background: as soon as I close all the background applications, the 5X disconnects and I obviously no longer get notifications.

Also, I get the attached notification from the Connect app: "Android notifications have stopped unexpectedly. In order to restore notifications for your Garmin device you will need to reboot your phone", which is *only affecting the Connect app*, while I perfectly get notifications from all my other apps..

For the above, this issue is certainly *not* caused by missing notification permissions (both in the Connect app and in the system settings), which I thoroughly checked and since otherwise I wouldn't receive any notifications when the Connect app is running in first place.

As an Android developer myself, just a heads-up it seems that the Connect app has not been migrated from GCM to Firebase, as I experienced a similar issues on my own apps... but of course this is just my assumption.

Thanks for any help/suggestion.
  • gtrevi - I'm ignorant of the internal workings of Android but are you suggesting that tgis issue is a result of not making changes needed to work properly with Pie? I am running Android Pie on my phone with no problems

The Connect app works perfectly on pie, that's not the issue.

The problem is that when you close all the applications running in background (including the Connect app of course), the notification service does not keep running in background, therefore you no longer get notifications on the 5x.
This is not happening on my other phone, a Galax S8 with Android 8.

Are you saying that this doesn't happen to you on your Android pie, i.e. by closing all your apps, including the connect app, you still get notifications on your watch?
  • Anybody can share their experience with the Connect app notifications on Android Pie?
    thanks

Works fine on my Google Pixel 2XL, texts, calls, appointments, etc and so on all show up on the watch correctly. They also fixed at some point the issue with live track not working unless you had the connect app open when you started a run or opened within a minute or two after starting.
  • Samsung Galaxy S8 running Pie, no problems at all.
Be aware that Huawei EMUI is very aggressive with regards to apps and battery handling. It is possible that services are being killed in the background as result.

Maybe I'm confused here. If it's the GCM app that is sending notifications to your watch and you close the app from running in the background on your phone, isn't it expected behavior to no longer receive notifications?

I had the same issue on my Huawei Mate 20 Pro (Android Pie). It was something to do with the automatic management of battery for applications running in the background.

If you go to the battery app settings for the Connect app you should be able to disable automatic management. ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1473914.jpg

If all above will fail, try to lock your GC with this little padlock. In my case its working, i have older Huawei phone. Maybe it will help in your case too.
