After over a year of fairly reliable gps performance my Fenix 5 suddenly started overestimating distance by a factor of 5-10x. I powered off and on and it was good for first 15km, then started same behavior. Interesting the track appears to be smooth and correct on the map view on Garmin Correct, but reporting a km every few hundred meters? Any one else see similar issues? Also elevation data is mostly nonsense with a slow descent from 20,000 meters over 10 minutes on a ski between 200-400m elevation.
I consider this recording to be corrupted and therefore I don't trust the visual representation of the data. It would be best to do a master reset and hopefully the problem will go away.
The Error First appeared when starting the ski that day. Watch had clocked 3km in the first few hundred meters. I stopped, started again, same error, stopped again, powered the watch down and back up. and it behaved normally for 15km, then I paused while I adjsutted some equipment and on resuming the track the crazy speed/distance numbers started again. At the turnaround at 1:23 I powered on and off again, restarted and the error occured again for some time, though less severe, then settled down to normal behaviour. Have done 1 Ski since with normal behaviour. What surprises me is the track is still correct. I expected the wild distances/speeds would be from scattered data points but the track continues to follow the trail as usual. Not sure exactly what you mean by recording corrupted or how that woudl occur. Not sure how to do a master reset, I will look into that.
This behaviour (correct GPS track but wrong speed/distance) is consistent with a scenario in which speed and distance is taken from a misconfigured footpod or a bike speed sensor. Do you have any such sensors paired and do you have distance/speed set to be taken from GPS only?
Another possibility - seeing that temperature and altitude jumped up exactly at the time speed went up - is a possibility of a static electricity charge that is known to impact the sensors. How do you wear the watch?
I have no other sensors, just the watch. I wear it directly on R wrist, no change in how I wear it for hundreds of sessions. I have been in contact with Customer service, they suggest it is faulty sensors and are helping me obtain a replacement.
