Map Update of TopoActive 2018.20 failed

My device prompted me today that an update for Topoactive Map 2018.20 is available.
Once starting the installer tells me that due to many new features the update is too large.

From the log its size is 7.19 GB

Which maps can i delete and how without getting XML files inconsistent?
It should be more than one, because the largest i currently have is the Cycle Map with approx 3.5 GB

Wonder that nobody reported it so far, several other users having this issue too. ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1453447.jpg
  • Sorry thay are not small, photo with file sizes

Apologies, I missed the .img files, they are map files of some sort.

The same issue over here. The Europe TopoActive Map to be installed is 7,9 Gb space.
Available on the 5x is only 2,05 Gb (of the total space of 14,2 Gb).

You should expect the new map will overwrite the current map, so there should be enough space on your device for installing the new map.
Otherwise it is rather strange Garmin is offering a map-update for a device knowing there is not enogh space on that specific device.

  • For what it's worth: Assuming that the issue I have with 2018.20 TopoActive EU map update is similar & related (and I do not have a proof, I only speculate)...

... then the above is a nonsense as:

    * I have 32GB SD card fitted plus ~7 GB available free space on the device
    * More importantly: Oregon 750t does support multiple map files, that can be simultaneously installed and managed (enabled / disabled) via device GUI.

Also with regards to the latter: I am fairly sure that I did remove other map files from SD card before attempting to update TopoActive EU maps.

Finally: I remain hopeful as I did not get any response from Support recently on this: I nudged them on the occasion of v6.12 release which (obviously and unsurprisingly) has not changed a thing.

The Garmin Fenix does not have any SD card available and you're in the Fenix subforum, not Oregon

For me it's clear: Garmin released a new map which includes the existing maps on the device. But Garmin is obviously not capable to delete the files during installation.
    They should during installation
    - identify which maps are installed
    - let the customer choose which map should be deleted
    - let the customer know the amount of free space
    - install the map after the customer deleted the other ones giving free space

But all Garmin can do is showing the customer a stupid error message which 90% of the customers do not understand where it comes from.
Sorry Garmin, for a 600 bucks device, you should do it better.
  • [SOLVED]
    howto
    • connect Fenix to your pc
    • use basecamp (Maps ==> Manage Map Products) to check the filename associated to your TopoActive Map
    • delete the related files with the .gma .img and .unl extension
    • delete the garmindevice.xml file (so totally it's 4 files deleted)
    • disconnect trom pc
    • reconnect to pc
    • launch garmin express update

    That's a workaround, not a solution

Garmin Express is supposed to delete an old map before writing the new version, however it's not doing this with TopoActive maps. I also had the error that this map could not be updated because of space (btw, I don't use any other maps but those preinstalled). This is the very same error I had back in summer 2018, and it seems Garmin has done nothing to fix it.

Just use Basecamp to view the name of TopoActive maps and delete them, go to express and update them, I managaed to update this way. These new map updates seem to be 1gb smaller that previous versions though.

I very politely say to Garmin staff that I don't have time to manage the watch's free space.
  • How do you all get the update? My Fenix 5 plus is still on the 2017.30 map for Western Europe.
  • That's a workaround, not a solution

...so prompted few times by Garmin Support staff recently I eventually performed the above earlier today (having made copy of the files I subsequently deleted) - and it has worked for me this time on Oregon 750t handheld unit. What's more, maps fitted on the device nicely despite previous erroneous message claiming that maps would not fit and need to be installed on SD card.

I am hoping that Garmin Support will be able to explain what happened - as there's barely any difference (one line only, I think?) between both garmindevice.xml files.
