Optical HRM Stops

Hello,

For the last couple of weeks the optical HRM randomly stops while wearing the watch. The only way I can get it working again is by powering off and on again.

It's a Fenix 5 currently on SW version 12.40 but the issue was present before the last update.Don't know if it's relevant or not, but for some workouts I do wear a chest HRM. When the optical HRM stops though, the chest strap is nowhere near.

Anyone know what might cause this?

Thanks!

Mine does this occasionally, and at the same time the battery starts falling through the floor. When yours is in this state, if you don't restart it, do you end up seeing horrific battery drain (think 30%/hour)?
  • Mine started doing this two days ago. A reset or power off and back on, will cause the sensor to work again for a minute or two, but then it turns off again. Mine never did this before I got to 12.40.
  • Look into Garmin Mobile after you sync the watch and see the stats for the day-long stress level and HR. You will see that it only works a few minutes a day after the 12.40 upgrade. I was extremely upset to see this. How could they have broken it like this? It was perfectly working as recently as in 12.00.
  • Just a quick update. Whenever the OHR sensor decides to stop, nothing can make it come back on, beside a reset or power off. Not even starting an activity. Unfortunately, even I power cycle the watch, and start an activity right away, the OHR sensor stops working after a short while. This is complete B******.
  • Same thing here, sometime I'm getting gap during the day or night from few min to 40min (this is not an exercise) just regular HR monitoring.

I'm not experiencing any change in battery life. Some times the HRM works for a couple of days after a restart, sometimes just a couple of hours.
  • Got a few hours of constant heart rate today, shows a straight line in Garmin Connect, the watch history did show the usual changing values, also the stress widget didn't stop. After a sync it was back to normal.
  • This has happened to me twice today. Both times required the power off/on to get it working. I’ve been on 12.40 for a while and hadn’t seen this behavior before today.

I have noticed drop outs for short periods in the past, but those were generally due to watch placement and never required reset to get it working. Today’s were likely placement as I was wearing the watch pretty loose, but the monitoring would not restart.

Edit: I should note, the first time I noticed it was mid morning after charging it overnight. It had not ever started recording.

it happened to me the first time after the installation of the FW 11 ... now I'm using the fenix without HRM, when I use it for an activity, I associate a heart rate belt
  • New update from me.
Downgraded to 12.00 durin the weekend, at the HRM sensor started working again as normal, although now I had the battery drain issue. Having the sensor working again, I updated to the 12.21 beta FW, which fixed my battery drain before. And boom. Same behavior again, good battery, but HRM sensor only working briefly and then off. Updated again to 12.40, and after countless reboots and on/off, the HRM has now been working for two days, without dropouts.

Also, something went on with the Garmin servers, and some fixes were applied the other day. I'm beginning to suspect the server part (and sync) to have something to do with the sensor error. At least that could explain why the sensor only worked shortly (until app. first sync), and why it is now working, with basically the same software, as when it didn't.

Anyway, for now, my problem is fixed.
