Garmin soft HR strap constantly loses connection to Fenix

Using the official Garmin soft HR strap. Constantly loses connection to Fenix 5. Same issue with second strap I buy. So the issue is not the strap itself or the battery.

The reason I know it's losing connection is in the Connect app, the HR will basically stop updating randomly with large gaps in the graph for HR. The only way to fix it is to re-link the watch each time it happens by re-searching for the HR sensor. And then the issue just keeps happening over and over.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any idea on a fix? I am running latest version of everything

  • Hi - wondering if you ever got an answer on this or a fix as this is occurring for me

  • i as well am having problems with the garmin chest strap and the fenix 5. i use it on the bicycle, and when i'm riding easy it will sometimes show high HR around 160 for a long time. then it seems like passing cars will make it go to 150 for a long time. then when i ride extremely hard, the HR will read 140. it also gets stuck on numbers as well.

this watch is entirely useless for HR

  • The best thing you can do is throw the Garmin chest strap in the garbage where it belongs and get a Scosche Rhythm heart rate monitor. I have had both and the Scosche connects faster and works way better with having to wear the stupid chest strap. And I completely agree with member 9021338, these Fenix watches are just about useless by them selves as a heart rate monitor!!

  • I have an HRM-TRI and a Fenix 5s

No disconnects during activities for months.

My only dislike is the strap seems to go to sleep and not talk to the watch almost immediately if there is no activity going on. But that may not be the strap and the ANT radio in the watch itself trying to save power.

Always make sure there is a quality battery in the strap. They say it lasts a year but don't trust that, like 6 months. I use a brand name like energizer or duracell 2032s because the cheap ones are under voltage.

You should be aware there is also a contact problem with some straps. In the winter especially when it is dry. People have to put contact gel on the strap or some use aloe vera gel with high moisture content.

The Fenix5 supposedly has a weak radio antenna problem, stryd had to improve their pod antenna to deal with it, not sure if that is what you are encountering but like I said, once an activity starts I don't get disconnects.

What's nice about the HRM-Tri is it also records HR locally, so if there is a disconnect it can download the entire activity later.

  • thanks, i figured out what was wrong. i forgot to remove the Polar speed sensor, and that was interfering with the signal.

    all's good now
