No PC sees my F5... Watch shows "updated to 12.30" but it's not! GPS 4.40(!) STILL

Hello everyone,

I am literally starting being sick of it,

About SW v10.00 PC stopped seeing my F5... Tried multiple PCs, with W10, W7, reseted F5, tried I think all topics out there, bought a new cable, nothing helped...

When the gallileo update came up, F5 instantly showed GPS version 4.40(!) since then I am still waiting...

Now F5 showed me like 5 times updated to 12.30, but when I get to settings it shows 12.00...

Please Garming... will next update kill my F5?! About the USB I wrote like half a year back... no response...

I am quite sick of it really...

    same here:

look at the thread just below this one:

    https://forums.garmin.com/forum/on-the-trail/wrist-worn/fenix-5-5s/1447617-gps-stuck-at-4-40

I'm trying with a hard reset ... let see.. if not.. back to garmin..
  • Same here, also seen the "updated to 12.30" text multiple times. But it is still at v12.00.

Did any of you guys attempt to reboot the PC with the watch connected?
I had the same on 12.51, which the watch showing the yellow exclamation mark under device manager, with the following error: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)

Rebooting the PC would make the watch visible until disconnected and reconnected back. If I did that, same thing happened, so another reboot was required.

    Hello guys,

Unfortunately I have tried all the ways you have written..

I am in a trap at this point, because no PC can see the watch, it just charges like if you use usb wall adapter....

I can't install a webupdater, because of some problem of win10... But I don't think it would help... since the watches are not seen.. (there is so sign of connecting in device manager..)

The watch works like a charm itself, but the connectivity lacks atm...

    Heya All,

The update 12.40 fixed the updating loop, perfect.

But still can't connect to the PC nor anything else...

A common problem is a bad USB cable or the actual USB cable inside the enclosure of your PC. I have had two machines that use a simple ribbon cable for USB from the motherboard to a front panel jack, resulting in very poor performance. Basic ribbon cables don't have good signal integrity to transport high speed signals like USB. I had to replace those with cut good quality USB cables to make it work right.

If your machine has a direct USB connectors off of the motherboard in the back, try that instead, or a known good USB hub connected to the PC (preferably on the back again). Also try a Garmin cable rather than an after-market one.

It takes several seconds for the Fenix to "wake up" the driver for mass storage on the Fenix. I think that only runs once a legit USB is detected, so it can take a little while. Give is a minute or two.

    Hello LiquidSquid,

unfortunately it doesn't seem to be PC problem, I have used my wifes cord, tried multiple PCs, my home PC, work laptop, at work my colleague's PCs with W10, W7.. nothing works..

To change ports at my PC...

At this moment I tried to connect my wife's watch to the exact same cord, it connects as it should. My watch just buzzes and show battery % as it is charged from a power outlet..

    Thank you for your reply.

My wife has Fenix 5s btw. :)

The same thing happened to me - watch not being recognized as a mass storage device when I plugged into a computer (would only charge), and the issue started after the same software update issue (updating to 12.40). I contacted support and they went through the usual new usb cord, factory reset, try different port/different computer. Then said they would replace it, but because I was just out of warranty, said I would have to be £130 for a refurbished version. I argued that the watch was fine until the software update, so they agreed to send me refurbished version for free (yay!) but it took a number of phone calls and getting to speak to a supervisor and then manager (which they tried their hardest not to do on the phone). You're not the only one with this issue either because I read others have the same problem, but Garmin help desk said the they had no knowledge. My refurbished one works fine, and I think Garmin came to a fair solution for me even though I was out of warranty (because their software update caused my issue.
