Calories burned. So many?!

Hi,
I got a Fenix 5 yesterday (replacing my older 910xt). Great thing about the Fenix is that I can use it as an everyday watch also (unlike the 910xt which would run out of battery too quickly).

I've never worn a fitness tracker but the Fenix does track activity and I have noticed that it is now
10:10 AM and Fenix tells me that I have already burned 998 calories. I have not done much more then wake up, shower, drive to work by car, walk two flights of stairs and work on my laptop. And since starting this forum post it is now at 1004 calories burned.

What is going on? Is this correct? How can I have burned 1004 calories at 10:14 AM?
  • So I looked more in detail. The calories that is shows is a total of calories used. It is comprised of Active Calories (burned doing physical activity) and resting calories ( the calories that are burned in a sedentary, unstressed, and awake state). It now shows Active= 90cal; Rest=934cal

I'm new to this, so to check with you all. Does this mean that I burned 90cal doing "wake up, shower, drive to work by car, walk two flights of stairs and work on my laptop". And I burned 934cal just sitting?!
How can it be so many at 10:30 in the morning? Is this calculated starting midnight? Could this be accurate?
  • I don't get this whole calories thing.

What is the total calories on my Fenix telling me?

Total calories burned= active cal + resting cal
    ==> active 90 + resting 956 = 1046 This shows on my Fenix.

On Garmin Connect App it shows a circle with in the middle 1493, underneath 2085
it shows active 95 (5 more then the fenix shows); consumed 592

Goal + active = adjusted goal
    ==> ==> 1990 + 95 = 2085

    Remaining calories
Adjusted goal - consumed = remaining
    2085 - 592 = 1493

Where and how does the total calories burned come into the equation?
Or are only the active calories used in calculation? I don't get it.
Also, why does total calories burned on my fenix watch face concern me if this total amount burned does not seem to be
of impact on what remains to be consumed?

I for some reason this calories thing has me confused....

    Hi,

We are unaware of how high is our basal metabolic rate indeed. Just staying alive is an energy costly activity.

On the calories arithmetic: I don't have any calories goal set up but I guess that:
-) Resting calories: basal metabolic rate
-) Active calories: burnt during activities
-) Goal calories: maximum energy you intend to consume (eat/drink)
-) Adjusted goal: if you exert any activity, you are allowed more cake/pizza/cappuccino, then sum up goal and active calories
-) Consumed: how much you have refuelled yourself already during the day (breakfast/lunch etc)

In your figures, you have eaten/drunk 592 cal already but your adjusted goal is 1990+(any activity consumption), then you are allowed eating/drinking 1493 cal more until midnight.

Not completely sure if that's exactly the meaning of that stuff but I think that makes sense.
  • It's quite simple, although arguably confusing. In the screen that you refer to:

    1) big number in the middle is the net calories against goal: Basal metabolic ("Resting") + Active - Consumed - Net calorie goal (coming from MyFitnessPal)
    2) small number below is the adjusted goal: Basal metabolic + Active - Net calorie goal (= this is how much you can eat meet your weight objective)
    3) below you see breakdown into:
    - Active = exercise + walking around
    - Consumed (coming from MyFitnessPal)
    - Formula for goal (see above)
    - Remaining calories to eat
    - Unfortunately the Basal metabolic number is not visible, for that you need to go to More > Health Stats > Calories

The Basal Metabolic calories depends on your weight, for me it's around 2,000 per day so after 10 hours it can absolutely be in the range of 800-1100 depending on your weight. My real numbers today are (30 mins before midnight): [TABLE="border: 1, cellpadding: 2, cellspacing: 0"]
