It needs to be paired through your phone's bluetooth in addition to Connect. If it appears in the list of paired devices, you should be able to do a smart unlock.
You actually should do both the app and the phone. It should not fail unless there is a compatibility problem with your phone. I presume you have an Android phone. Which model phone are you using with which version of Android?
You could try long pressing the Fenix 5x in the list of devices in the connect app. It should ask you if you wish to update the connection. Mayb an update tot he connection is all that is needed.
Maybe I'm missing something, but why would you want to use Smart Lock with your fenix?
Basically you're phone would unlock anytime it was near your watch. For most people that is most likely almost 100% of the time. That completely defeats the purpose of locking your phone. Smart Lock is great feature allowing you geo-fence, auto-unlock in your car or bluetooth speaker. I just don't see two are usable and do anything for your personal security.
It would prevent someone else from using your phone if they weren't near you or your watch. Probably a bit less secure than the other scenarios. Someone could incapacitate you, take your phone and your watch.

That's not how it works. It only keeps the phone unlocked while staying near your watch. However, once the phone doesn't "see" the watch, it locks and you have to unlock it manually - even when it gets near your watch again. At least that's how it works on my phone. Maybe other manufacturers implement this differently.
