Recovery time indoor training

New owner here... appear to have got most things set up and finding my way around the watch however I have the following question:

Most of my weekly training is on the indoor (tacx flow, TTS 4.0, then pushed to strava). I generally wear a garmin HR strap that connects to my PC via ant+ but i'm keen to use estimated recovery time on my fenix 5 to make me more efficient. How should I go about doing this? Will the watch just record my HR and V02 max independently to my turbo trainer and work it out from there? I don't understand how it can work if it doesn't track my actual training?

  • If you pair your Fenix with the HR strap and the trainer, it will record HR and power (and some other stuff like speed and cadence) independently from TTS, and make its own calculations based on that - including training effect, recovery time and VO2 max.

I am using a similar setup and it seems to be working well.

Very interesting. I've paired my Fenix 5 with the HR strap. Easy. Connecting my watch to my turbo... nope, not so easy. I go to 'add device' on the turbo, it scans but doesn't pick anything up. My turbo is an older machine so connects to the PC with a USB cable. I then have an ANT+ dongle in a USB port to pick up the HR sensor... guess i'm screwed? Is there any other way to get the VO2 or HR and recovery time working without upgrading my turbo as that's massively expensive?
  • You need to add the turbo to the watch not the watch to the turbo.

yes but my turbo is an older smart trainer that links to a PC via USB not BT. The only was I can get a HR strap to work with my turbo is via an ant+ dongle on the PC. Does this mean i'm stuck?
  • No, just the HR data will generate recovery time and training load. With ANT+, you should be able to get the HR data on both the watch and the turbo at the same time.

It won't be quite as accurate as having the power data as well, but recovery time is subject to a fair bit of individual variation anyway.

Generating VO2Max does require a power meter as well as HR data, but I don't think you will be able to get that with your wired turbo trainer.
  • Sorry, I assumed Flow Smart.

If TTS is recording power and HR data, it should be possible to export the activity from TTS, import it into Connect and use TrueUp to update the watch with it.
  • I managed to get my turbo to export a file, import this into connect then automatically sync with my watch and strava. Very simple and gives me most of the functionality I was looking for. Thanks for the help
