New owner of Fenix 5

Hello fellas, so I bought the Fenix 5 watch, the regular one, and I have lot of questions and things I need help with, I think this is the right forum because on its pinned topics there is the new update 11.0, and I just updated my watch in the settings and it was written 11.0, but there two forums of the Fenix 5/5S or Fenix 5/5S PLUS.

Okay so, lets go to the questions :)

1) How do I connect my watch with my phone fast? I mean if I want it to show notifications, phone calls, because now its not working even if it is written "connected". (This is after i did pair my phone to the watch and the Garmin Connect is running and after i checked all the settings on the Garmin Connect and on my watch, all turned to ON for notifications and all.)

2) How do I know if the GPS is tracking my run? Or its low signal, or turned off, how do I sure that its turned on and i can begin running?

3) The watch seems with litlle pixles, I dont know if its should be like that or the graphics supposed to be very good or not, and you can see it more when using watch faces. And about watch faces, what do use? the one that you get when you bought the watch? you changed? downloded? if you can send good options to watch faces that you love it will be great.

4) I can use spotify playlists with my watch? if yes, how? and how do I control music?

5) How do use your watch while "resting", I mean in the whole time your not training, there is options to make it save battery or something? turn off GPS? things like that?

And further more, if you have good tips things you figured out and you wish you knew before, every tip will be good, just write it :)
Thanks for all!!
  • 1. I'm not sure whether you are running iOS or Android on your phone. I'm more familiar with Android. For notifications to happen, you need to have them ON in the watch, ON in the GCM app, and also in the GCM app under Settings> Smart Notifications you need to select which phone apps can send notifications.

    2. When you start a run, you will see a red ring around the outside of the watch face. As it acquires more satellites, the ring will go around the watch face, and once it reaches a full circle, it will turn green showing it has enough satellites, and you are ready to go. A message saying "GPS ready" will also show up. The first time you use the watch, this will be slow. Subsequent starts should be faster, as the watch automatically downloads an almanac of satellite orbit data, making getting a position faster.

    3. Not all custom watch faces are designed for the display resolution of the F5. If someone has ported a watch face for the F5 that was designed for a different resolution watch face, it might be somewhat grainy. If this bothers you, stick with a Garmin watch face rather than a custom one. As for watch faces, some like a lot of data on the screen (I think Gearmin is one of the most popular in this category), others prefer a less cluttered look that enables them to read a few pieces of essential information at just a glance. Bear in mind that the F5 is designed as an ultra-endurance sports watch, with massive running time - the display is optimized to reduce power usage. You pay a price for the flashy graphics on an Apple watch - the device struggles to make it much beyond a single day between charges, while the F5 gives you 2 weeks. Also, as a sports watch, the F5 screen performs better in full daylight than indoors (this is opposite to what you are probably used to with a cell phone, which can be hard to read in sunlight).

    4. The Fenix 5 does not offer on-board music or streaming (hardware limitations). You would need the F5 Plus for that. You can however control the music player on your phone through the watch - the music widget allows you to do this.

    5. In watch mode (ie. "resting"), the watch is extremely frugal in power consumption - you should be able to get 2 weeks usage in watch mode between charges with the default settings. GPS will automatically shut off when you end an activity.
  • Sorry but its very tempting to state it. Did you read the manual even for 5 minutes? :)

    1) The "smart notifications" on GCM I didn't knew, I did it but its still not working. I did make sure that my phone has bluetooth, and the notifications are ON in the watch, in GCM everywhere, even in the settings on my phone on application settings I make sure that the GCM app have all permissions. I do have android, my phone is Xiaome Redmi 5 Plus.

    2) The GPS is automatic turned ON while I select activity? And what is that GOLNASS?

    3) I'll check it, thanks.

Yes I've read the manual, and all the questions are because its now good manual and some things like the bluetoth are not working suddenly.

This is something else explained in the manual... But, for any given activity you can select whether GPS is on and if so, if it is GPS, GPS+GLASNOS or GPS+GALIELO.

Press the top right hand button once to get the list of activities.

Use the lower left and middle left buttons to cycle through the list and select the activity you want to edit.

Press the top right button to select it.

Press the left middle button and hold it for a full second to get into the configuration.

Use the top right hand button to select what you want to edit, for example, "Run Settings" for the run activity.

Use the left middle and left bottom buttons to select what you want to edit. Look for "GPS."

Press the top tight hand button to select the thing you want to edit.

Use the left bottom and middle buttons to cycle through the options (off, GPS, GPS+GLASNOS, GPS+GALIELO).

Use the top right hand button to select your choice.

Press the bottom right hand button to back out, pressing it four times to get back to the watchface.

    There, see, simple! ;-)

Thank you very much! But I think I could handle this by myself with all the buttons, I meant what is the diffrences between regular GPS, golnass and galileo, and I just wanted to know if in "rest" mode it will turn off.
And abot GCM, sometimes it just appear in my notifications on my phone even after I closed the app and the bluetooth, how can I shut it off easily? If Im not near my watch or just dont want sync it and use bluetooth and just save battery for travelling or something?

and about the notifications and phone calls, its still not working I dont know why. I think its a problem with the bluetooth or something
  • GLONASS is a satellite positioning system operated by Russia as an alternative to GPS. Gallileo is a similar system operated by the European Union. Both of these operate globally, although the orbits of GLONASS are slightly biased towards higher latitudes.

If you have an open view of the horizon, GLONASS and Gallileo make little difference. If your view is obscured (eg. a narrow valley, tall buildings) then being able to access a 2nd constellation of satellites may increase your chances of being able to see enough satellites on at least one system to get an accurate fix. The downside is increased battery usage.

BLE is low energy, and battery consumption on both the watch and your phone is minimal from having it on. If it bother you, just turn the BLE connection off on the watch (through the controls menu, accessible by holding the Light button.

As for notifications, if you can sync, Bluetooth is working fine. I'd suggest looking at which aspects of your phone GC has permissions for, within GC for what apps can send notifications (Smart Notifications), and when notifications will be displayed (Device Settings).

and about the notifications and phone calls, its still not working I dont know why. I think its a problem with the bluetooth or something, I did try to do the things above but with no success. Actually when I tried "find my phone" it worked for the first time, but in the second time it only showed on my watch if I near the phone or no (in the first time it made the phone rings), and when I tried the control music options it just opened the google music on my phone, the rest of the things doesn't work. I don;t know why. Even if all the settings are ON everywhere, and it is written "connected" on my watch and GCM.
