How to avoid fw upgrade?

Hi guys,

Does anyone know how to avoid the watch being upgraded? I want to keep 10.51b but F5x keeps updating to 11.0.0.0 despite the fact I have Auto Update set to off...
At first I thought I could have been the one messing things up when 11.00 came alive but after suffering the misere of downgrading to 9.20 and than installing 10.51b back again I got surprised the watch downloaded the new firmware and gave me only two options:
1) Install now
2) Install tonight
Because I had AUTO UPDATE set to off I chose "Install tonight" in a hope it would ignore it but .... it got updated to 11.00
Any ideas?

I haven't tried this, but someone posted a trick where you connect the device to a PC and edit \GARMIN\garmindevice.xml. If you change the SoftwareVersion value to something really high like "9999" (99.99), I think that's supposed to prevent updates.

I have (had) auto updates off and got caught by starting Garmin Express when plugged in. Set the watch to update. I seem to recall I just hit back or something when presented with the now or tonight option and it never happened.

Do you have wifi Auto-Upload on? I've skipped updates in the past to avoid broken features and as long as I didn't wifi sync or plug it in to a PC with Express running it never installed the update (I only used bluetooth to sync). My guess is that the auto update setting mostly applies to bluetooth sync and wifi may be the culprit.

I don't even have wifi configured.
I do connect to a PC due the transfer of track and waypoints that I use a lot.
Auto update off should meaning off, period...

Select "install tonight" then connect the 5x to the pc without opening Express and remove the downloaded firmware binary file in the Garmin folder (I do not remember the name but it is easy to understand which file)
