I remember reading on Stryd's website that it does not work very well the the Fenix 5. Was wonder then if the Garmin FP would be the best foot pod to use with this watch? Or if other have suggestion of what they use? I do a lot of OCR races, so I need one that I can jump into the water with and not worry about it breaking.
Now Stryd says that it will work with F5 but they also say that it may work better for some and less ideal for others. Not know of one that can hold the water immersion though.
My Stryd has always worked ok with my F5, only very occasional dropouts . Helps to have it far forward on the shoe. Its absolute accuracy is not as good as they claim, varying 2% shoe to shoe and day to day, but it is much more consistent over a range of paces than the Garmin pod was. It has a hole for a barometer and I doubt it would stand up to long immersion, though. Not sure what the Garmin pod rating is, will check tonight.
Stryd has always worked flawlessly with my F5 and I found it to be very precise on trails (not sure how you tell if it is accurate on a trail when talking about 1 or 2%). I also have crossed many streams and swam in swimming holes with no issues. I think as long as you are not in neck deep water for a long period of time it would be good to go. I have no experience with other foot pods.
I’ve not had any issues with my Garmin SDM4 foot pod or my RunScribe Plus pods running in very wet conditions and ankle deep stream crossings. RunScribe’s website www.runscribe.com currently states “IPX6. Rain is fine, but deep creek crossings are not recommended” and I suspect most other pods are similarly rated. Since the release of the RunScribe sensor fusion firmware (version 36.01 and up). I’ve found the RunScribe pods to consistently give distance well within 2% (once the initial 3 calibration runs are done). They also connect fine to my Fenix 5 (first set had to have the provided signal booster strips attached to work with the F5, but the latest versions that come with the blue cradles work fine as is).
