I'm trying to verify whether the Fenix 5 has wifi or not. The product page is confusing "Bluetooth® Smart, ANT+®, Wi-Fi® with sapphire editions". The wording makes me think that the 5 without sapphire doesn't have wifi. Which is good, I don't want wifi. My job requires me to access secure locations where wifi and cellular data is not allowed so I need a good multisport that doesn't have wifi. I like my Vivoactive 3 for the features, but I despise the touchscreen so I'm trying to find a watch like it without touch.
I'm aware of the hot spotting issue and such. The Marine Corps has an order that states that Bluetooth is acceptable but wifi and cellular are not allowed in secure locations. Hopefully that doesn't change in the future as it's getting hard enough to find a tracker I can use without wifi. It'll be impossible to find one without bluetooth.
The Wifi is somewhat limited, you can only trigger a WIFI sync manually or it starts after saving an activity. No third party apps or widgets can use the Wifi to get data, its just for syncing with Garmin, and the watch only connects to preconfigured Wifi networks you need to setup with Garmin Connect Desktop. The watch cant connect if you have to accept terms of use before using your wifi, its not build to work with that.
But yea if its a simple "is it wifi capable?" I guess you cant have the Saphire version or the newer plus ones.
