Any Strava user here? Start getting mismatch numbers from Garmin Fenix 5X and Strava

Anybody else uses Strava on here?

Recently (firmware 11) I am getting mismatch numbers between whats showing up in my Garmin Fenix 5X (Garmin Connect) and numbers after exported to Strava. Strava is always showing long distance with less time than whats showing on the watch.

Anybody else experiencing the same thing? How to fix it? Thanks.

Just checked and yes, there are differences but (for my purposes) they are slight. e.g. time on watch 2:24:10 and on Strava 2:24:11 for elapsed. Pace is different, 7:02 on watch and 6:56 on Strava. Distance 20.48 on watch and 20.47 on Strava.
As far as I can tell, this behaviour hasn't changed for me with the change in watch s/w version.

  • The difference I have is pretty big

    distance: 9.37 vs 9.9
    time: 1:30:01 vs 1:28:37

Yup, that's a big difference. Timewise, is it perhaps due to the difference between elapsed time and moving time? (Not that that helps explain the distance discrepancy) Were you using normal GPS or perhaps Ultratrack? (Ultratrack is terrible for accuracy). I know that when I first tried out mine there were some very large issues with distance, but they seem to go away. Perhaps look at how Strava calculates distance. It clearly doesn't just accept what the watch sends to it. Also see if you can work out what the distance actually was (using a map independent of Garmin and Strava).

Another thing is that I sometimes am suspicious of how the watch calculates the distance because I do remember also once uploading a track from the watch to Basecamp and having it work out the distance. It got a total quite different from what the watch was reporting. Again, I haven't noticed such problems lately.

Also, check your GPS firmware version in settings->system->about->page down a couple. Has it properly updated to 2.30 or is it stuck in 4.40 (!) ?

Sorry, not much help here, other than to say, yes, there is something odd going on. I guess you've looked at other reports on the forum about the lack of accuracy from the GPS.
  • No issues here with 11.0 final from this morning.
Pace and distance came from Stryd footpod.

    Strava: https://www.strava.com/activities/1909631494
    Garmin: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/3095245908

When using distance correction from Strava it goes from 15,29km to 15,22km.
Elevation correction from 118m to 164m on Strava. Correction enabled on Garmin Connect gives another 9m to 173m
  • I checked my last ride and the distance is the same on watch and Strava (I use a speed sensor) both 12.09 miles. The times are off but only a few seconds - Strava has a 40 second longer moving time.
  • Post links to the garmin and strava activities
  • As far as the time discrepancy goes, Strava calculates its own moving time and uses that to represent your activity time, unless you pause the activity at least once, in which case Strava will respect your activity time. If you pause your activity at least once, the time shown in Strava and GC should be identical.

As far as distance discrepancies go, when I have bad GPS data every now and then (e.g. running downtown with tall buildings and/or not getting a good fix beforehand), Strava always seems to add some extra distance and the track ends up looking different than the GC track. They just have some weird algorithms for dealing with missing GPS data, I think. I've never seen it regularly, tho, but I don't run downtown every day.

If you're seeing regular discrepancies, that could point to GPS issues, but who knows?
  • hi all!
In my case Strava and Connect are the same:

    Strava: Distance: 4.5km / Pace: 6:40 min/km / Total time: 30:02
    Connect: Distance 4.51km / Pace: 6:40 min/km / Total time: 30:02

and with Runtastic is the same as well:

    Distance: 4.51 km / Pace: 6:39 min/km / Total time: 30:01

But, Runtastic is not registering Heart Rate, which previously was populating. It is kind like registering the first 10 minutes or so.

I don't know about heart rate in Strava since I don't have Summit.

    Anyone in the same case?
  • LeoPac72 Strava should still show HR even without Summit. I see my average HR in the summary, and if I tap "View Analysis", I can see the full graph and the max HR.
