Whilst Connect Mobile is great in lots of ways, the lack of ability to plan a course/route as you can on the web version of Connect is a real pain. I found a brilliant free third party app (or £1.99 to remove ads) called Easy Route (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/easyroute/id605127860?mt=8) which allows you to plan a route and then export it as a GPS file directly into Mobile Connect. It then appears as a course in Connect Mobile and then you can save it and export it to your watch.
I find it's best to have Connect Mobile open at the same time as you do the export from Easy Route. Easy Route isn't perfect but it's pretty good and gives you the ability to plan a course when getting online to access full Connect just isn't an option. Just yesterday afternoon for example on a long drive home I decided I fancied a run in a countryside area I didn't know. I parked up, got out my phone, plotted a route on Easy Route (including roads and footpaths/trail) exported it as a Course to Connect app and synced it to my watch - got changed and I was off.
Hope that's useful for some of you whilst we wait for Garmin to get mobile course planning sorted themselves!
