FW11.0 & GPS Update

Please advise...I currently have GPS4.40(!) showing even though my fw is 11.0....Do I need to downgrade my gps to get gallileo 2.30? Im a bit confused on this. I appreciate and guidance.

Jim
  • You’ll need to leave the watch connected to phone with GCM open for a few hours to get software updates; they happen very slowly in the background due to the data transfer limitations of BLE. A couple of syncs per day just won’t do it unfortunately.

mine GCM is always on in background. never force close. (iphone)
  • Use Garmin Express as explain above !!!

it says above to (sync with Garmin Connect Mobile or run Garmin Express again) i dont own i PC, do i have to buy a pc so I can have a updated garmin watch.. that is just stupid
  • Rijald If you can configure the WiFi on your F5, I’ve generally found that a manually initiated WiFi sync is the simplest way of getting any available software updates without plugging in to a PC/Mac with Express on (you may need to manually initiate the install after the WiFi sync though). One other thing to note, I typically have noticed the release of software updates via GCM or WiFi is a day or two behind the release via Express. I’ve no idea why this is so, but it’s just what I have observed over time with the Fenix 3, 5 and 5 Plus.

yes i should wait a couple of days.
Fenix 5 without Saphire dosent have wifi.

In that case I think you will just have to wait it out for GCM/BLE to deliver the update in due course; unless you have a friend with a PC/Mac willing to install Express or Garmin Web Updater
  • I was on beta releases since fw 10.53 and now it upgraded over the night to 11.00
What this means? Is my F5 now on official fw 11.00 or still on an prerelease beta 11.00 version?

I saw on other topic that 11.00 beta release was launched on october, 5th and official on october, 9th.
Is there any differences between the two releases?
  • Garmin Fenix 5. Updated to 11.0 a couple of days ago, but GPS stayed at 4.40!. Updated frequently with GCM. I connected it to GE today (Oct 12), and it pushed the GPS update. Now it is showing GPS 2.3, and the GPS + Galileo is available. It is really any advantage in North America to have GLONASS and GALILEO?.
  • You're on the official 11.00, but the beta 11.00 was identical, so if you had the beta 11.00, there was no change.

Getting the 2.xx is often a separate step that happens after the main FW is installed. (the "!" indicates it needed the update)
  • What happens to the GPS version if you already have 2.24? Will it leave that alone and just install 11.0. Or will it install gps 2.23 as well.
  • yeah GC only fetched the main update not GPS - would guess it takes much longer through that connection to get it. I connected mine to express and received the update in seconds. Now to work out if I should use GPS+Gallileo permanently on all runs or just with big trees / buildings nearby
