Gps version 223

Yesterday I read the change log of the fenix 5x-plus last beta , they claimed an improved gps functionality : gps v223.
The previous 5x-plus one vas gps v220 same version name used by 5x last beta.
To make the story short: verified with "code compare" that the two V220 files are identical and downloaded V223.
The upgrade went perfectly and after one hour of "track me" walking It "seems" to me that we have a better GPS firmware.

  • Iam on 10.0 with gps ver 4.40. Latelyv it's been taking minutes to get a gps lock where it used to take seconds. My epo on the watch says current. Any idea why suddenly it's taking that much longer, around 3, 4 min when it used to take 15 sec?
  • Installed GPS 223 from 5x plus to my 5x. Open water swim now works! Running works as well.
  • Not the battery gauge app, but I document the battery usage based on what the watch write in fit file every 5th minute.
    5,5-6%/hour with footpod, no backlight
8-8,5%/hour with FP, nav, livetrack and map up almost all the time, no backlight
Ive been on 10.51 and gps 2.23 last 5 runs. No long run yet.
  • I did not know the app, just have installed that so I will be checking it and let you know.
  • Just tested this GPS 2.23 extensively hiking in Bernese alps. Can report: battery drain was only bad and gps fix only slow the first time I used it (came from Canada; needed to get new soak data). Then settled in to fast fix and similar battery usage as v2.20.

Got some track "jumps" hiking with GPS+GLONASS; those went away when I switched to GPS+Gallileo. A couple of times the GPS tracking just stopped (I've had this less frequently on old FW versions). Easy fix, mid-activity: hold Up/Menu button, select Hike Settings, GPS, Off, and then hit Back/Lap button. Wait a second, then go back into Hike Settings and re-enable GPS. It gets a new fix.

Also open water swim floating down the Rhine in Basel and it worked, though battery drain was more aggressive than in hiking.
  • The issue of expired EPO was fixed in the Garmin Express update for PC. If you are still seeing this issue after updating Garmin Express to version 6.8.1.0, please reach out to us through our Product Support channels (phone, email, or chat) so that we can work with you directly.
