Gps version 223

Yesterday I read the change log of the fenix 5x-plus last beta , they claimed an improved gps functionality : gps v223.
The previous 5x-plus one vas gps v220 same version name used by 5x last beta.
To make the story short: verified with "code compare" that the two V220 files are identical and downloaded V223.
The upgrade went perfectly and after one hour of "track me" walking It "seems" to me that we have a better GPS firmware.

  • Thanks a lot for this information. It looks like a great news for us. I'm going to do the same.
  • Wow, and how to do it? Just take gps file of 5x plus and place it to this remotesw folder?
  • Yes , exactly.
Be aware : the update driver works perfectly on fenix 5x and family but the advantages are still to be confirmed , these are multi-device drivers, surely they can sense the gps chipset and use the data it sends back , we could have only little or no gain with this driver.
  • I will give this a go tomorrow...I'll take any opportunity to improve the GPS... I have mine on last night in my tent whilst monitoring overnight Temps with the Tempe sensor and despite never leaving my sleeping bag let alone my tent the GPS recorded 6km!
  • Not that it really matters but judging gps quality by how much jitter occurs overnight provides little relationship to quality while moving. Expected signal accuracy ( and precision) allows for a surprising amount of this jumping around even under good conditions so seeing this type of “movement” overnight while stationary is normal. This jitter impact is substantially reduced while moving through filtering algorithms which is why tracks will generally be better as you increase speed. Way back we used to have stationary races on the forum with our F1s and F3. I’ll also note that even a military grade large receiver with large antenna on the roof of military vehicle) I was in would bounce around a few meters every second when parked. This can add up quickly.
  • I tried some activities today and first feeling is that it is more accurate, the line of activity was nice and straight (GPS only). GPS fix took quit long time also second activity (about 5 minutes) and also it looks it drains battery, but it could be this initial draining which stops later on, let us see.
  • since beta 10.51? my Fenix shows EPO expired no matter what I do. It downloads an EPO file when connected through computer but watch always claims EPO expired.

so check in SETTINGS/ABOUT and scroll down to the EPO screen.

I did not notice until beta 10.51 - and I find the watch quite slow to acquire GPS.

I have reported it to Garmin but no response.
  • getting EPO expired here too - I tried a GCM mobile sync and no change. Then I tried Garmin Express on the PC - this definitely puts an EPO.bin file in the /REMOTESW folder but it seems like the watch doesn't process it as it's still there after a watch reboot.

Tried deleting the EPO.bin file and resyncing - Garmin Express then puts another EPO.bin file in place - but it's still ignored.

    guessing that's a bug

I’ve got a Tactix Charlie on 10.53 and the EPO is showing as current for me.
