I can't find a way to navigate without F5x using a map. I want to navigate to a specific waypoint (in a city for example and just wandering around between start and finish) and F5x just giving me an arrow for direction. So without saying I'm "off track" when I take a turn later or earlier. Am I missing some other way of navigating?
First, this forum is for the Fenix 5x, so if by F3 you mean Fenix F3, then try posting in a Fenix F3 forum.
For the 5x, you can choose between two kinds of navigation: Use Map and Use Route. With Use Map, the watch will re-calculate the route if you miss a turn. With Use Route, the watch will complain that you are off-route.
For just getting a direction and distance to your target - regardless of street layout - try a direct navigation like 'Open Water Swim' and navigate to say a saved location. That will give you just an arrow pointing to your target.
You say "the watch will re-calculate the route". In my experience the F5x has never recalculated when navigating by Use Map, It just states that I'm off route just like Use Route.
The best option is missing from my point of view: just show the rout on the map and arrow where you are at i.e. hiking activity. So pitty this is impossible.

I have seen frequent re-calculations - if I go well off the route. Worst example was a 10K run I planned. Took a wrong turn, did not realize it for a while. Watch then decided the long route was too complicated for me and calculated the shortest route to the end-point :-)
