I have been using my 5X since mid march daily for trail runs, SUP, mtb and road cycling. Looking at reports VO2max is shown for all but "cycling". Looking at the graph for all activities it shows green and blue bars in the key and green bar shows on the graph. Just not the blue for cycling. I assume cycling reports do not require a chest strap. Is there a minimum number of days before it begins to display this data? I had surgery 5 weeks ago so just getting back on the bike this week and have 3 days of data. A month or so ago after a long mtb ride my report did not display a cycling VO2max either, so assumed maybe it was specific to the "cycling" widgit alone (which would be odd as it is cycling). Any feedback is appreciated. My VO2max to date for All Activities as well as Running is 42 and was 43 through surgery and back at 42 currently (62 yrs. old). I am easing back into gaining some base miles cycling so would be nice to have this data. BTW, Using FW 10.0 currently.
Cycling VO2Max for cycling needs a power meter (and HR sensor) - not sure if you have a power meter. Also note that with running - an activity based on trail running activity will not compute a V02Max (by design). Although the wrist sensor for HR will do, generally you will get better results with a chest strap. Also, possible that MTB does not compute Vo2max (similar to running) but this I do not know. https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/fenix5/EN-US/GUID-E17003DB-1F26-483E-A8B4-BBF04B4E3A9B.html
Interesting... I read that info long ago and that has been my assumption.. Need for a power meter. I don't use a chest strap or power meter and wear the Fenix on my wrist cycling. I have been alternating trail runs with ocean paddling/SUP and using associated activities, and it has been generating VO2max data on watch and GC (went from 41-43 before my surgery). It would expect it to handle any cycling activity the same way though potentially better with a strap and power meter, etc.... My assumption is that mtb and cycling are the same, though I set them up differently.
Image that follows is just the Trail Running Activity, and assume SUP is lumped in All Activities.
Are you just using a running activity for trail runs (or doing the odd regular run each month)? The specific Trail Run Activity (or a copy of it) will not calculate Vo2Max - this was a change made a long time ago with the F3 because it was so inaccurate on anything other than smooth, fairly flat runs. lots of steep hills, technical terrain, bad footing (mud, sand, snow) results in the algorithm seeing a high HR and a slow speed, thus dropping the computed Vo2max.. Prior to the modification, my value would drop from low 50's (which corresponded closely to a lab treadmill test) to low 40's come winter when I would snowshoe run - more effort, less "speed".
I am using the trail running activity and had been doing a run 3-4 days weekly. I am running up and down canyons and rocky terrain but had no idea what numbers I should be at. My last testing when XC MTB racing was 2004 so using that as a goal. Lol.
