first run GPS inaccurate

I did my first run today with the fenix 5x.
Very sad to see that the gps was very inaccurate. the run was like 10% off with the same run done with my old watch (tomtom spark).
The strange thing was that it recorded 10% less distance so my pace was 10% lower then in reallity.

In strava i could fix the distance so the run got fixed.

is this normal?
I mean this watch is like 500 dollar more expensive then the tomtom.

edit:

this is an example:

the red line is what the garmin recorded and the purple line is what the fenix recorded.
I never experienced this with my old watch.

could record one second help?
  • Have you configured both GPS and Glonass settings, also check your data recording is set to every second instead of smart recording, that should improve things for you.
  • haven't set glownass because I red that it made things worse.
On my way home I did an bike ride with one second on and that was better. Didn't test it on a run yet.
    ???
  • GPS satellites drift slightly in their orbits, which can make initial signal acquisition harder and can increase inaccuracy. There is an almanac of the latest data on this orbital drift included in the GPS signal itself, but it takes about 13 minutes to download. As your first run with the Fenix will not have had this almanac (while the TomTom did), some inaccuracy is to be expected. Now that your watch has this almanac of satellite orbital data, it should be faster to get an accurate GPS fix on the Fenix in the future.

Note that your watch will need to download a new almanac anytime a. you perform a watch reset/firmware update b. don't use the GPS for 2 weeks or c. move more than 200km from your last GPS position.
  • Well when i compare the Fenix 5x with my edge1000 (bicycle rides) and tomtom (running) it performce the worst of the three
There is an gps drift and sometimes the gps just looses it and goed in a circle.

The edge 1000 always has super straight lines even in the corners.
  • Oké I did an new run today with my phone in my other hand to compare.
GPS only and one second recording.
My phone recorded 6.8 km while the fenix only recorded 6.04 km.
    That is 12% off.
Totally unacceptable for an so called sport watch. My stats are worthless now.

Have you tried using GPS+Glonass like I suggested earlier? The thing to also remember is that you're assuming the phones GPS is correct, why do you trust that more than your watch?

I will try that. Others say it only make things worse.

The phone is more like my old tomtom. We had an runner's group with different people and watches (tomtom and polar) they where all in the same range (maybe 2 percent off). And now my new watch doesn't match at all (more then 10% off).
that's why I did the test in the first place.

but I will run with both my fenix as my TomTom soon.
  • Did an new test while walking.
GPS and glonass on, one second recording.
When out of forest an with no building all is good but when entering a city the GPS is just going all over the place.

My TomTom (blue) Is just spot on the place where I walked.
the Garmin(green) adding several meters in this small piece. In the forest the opposite is going on,the Garmin is missing lots of meters because it cutting corners and missing a lot of the trail.

Not sure if my fenix model is faulty or my TomTom is mega accurate.

  • Sorry Mauricewall but all the tips in this tread don't work. With my forerunner 620, Fenix 3 and Fenix 5x, I never had as good GPS as my old forerunner 410. (GPS+Glonass, GPS+ galiléo, 1 seconds recording... all are placebos). GPS chip is bad, that all... If you can't leave with it, I suggest you to return your watch if you can... After years, no update corrected this problem on any Garmin watch with mediatek chips

    Sorry for my bad English.
  • What I don't understand is that on 95% of the reviews is being said that it's an good watch for running.
but with this results it can't even be taken serious.

any idea what smartwatch has good gps results?
