Ride - all sensor data intact, but GPS track is extremely truncated

Hi folks,

First time poster here - tried searching for similar issues, but couldn't find a related post that might answer my question.

I'm having an issue lately on 9.20 (not sure if it happened previously, but definitely on 9.20), where on a ride of say, 30km, my garmin speed and cadence sensors, as well as my non-Garmin heart rate monitor, are all logged accurately, but the GPS track from the 5x is not - the course shown in Strava and Garmin Connect is extremely short. In the case of tonight's 30km ride, the GPS track seems to stop about 1km in, and never picks up again.

In terms of settings, I'm using GPS+GLONASS, 1 second sampling interval, the extended power savings timeout, etc - should be a very stable setup for recording a ride. The 5x sits on a Garmin handlebar mount, and clearly the activity wasn't accidentally stopped during the ride, otherwise it wouldn't have recorded the 30km worth.

Anyone having similar issues?

Thanks!

    hi Scott,

Attach the file from the activity in a reply and I'll take a look at it and see if anything is obvious.

    cheers

Thanks Mike, it's attached to this post here.

TrippyZ - when you say post a link to the activity, do you mean the same thing?

    hi Scott,

There is nothing obvious in the file apart from the fact that the GPS records just suddenly stop being recorded in the .fit file 3mins 25secs into your activity.

Do you have any developer data apps on the device? You're updated with the latest firmware?

If it happens again it might be worthwhile doing a Master Reset on your device but first google what files you need to save so you don't have to set your device screens up from scratch again.

    cheers

Thanks Mike! Confirms, at least, what I experienced which is that data collection from my sensors continued, and it was only GPS that was impacted.

Only third party app I have on the watch is Strava Routes, rest is stock (not even any third party watchfaces). Firmware is current (9.20).

It will happen again, sadly - it's happened at least 3-4 times now in the last couple of months.

I'm considering, before undertaking a master reset, maybe trying a power cycle of the watch before each activity, just to see if a clean boot helps things run more smoothly.

    Kind regards,
    Scott

  • I hadn't had this happen before but it occurred yesterday. I had upgraded to the latest beta in the morning. Was running 9.72 previously. GPS just went off course and stopped 2/3s of way through ride. The rest of the sensors (bar elevation) kept tracking.
