Fenix 5S turn by turn navigation

Hi everyone, I just bought a fenix 5S saphhire last week and I love this watch. But I have some issues with the course navigation, particularly turn by turn.

Is the turn by turn navigation available on Fenix 5S ?

I found a lot of topics on how to enable turn by turn navigation on Fenix 5, but nothing specific about Fenix 5S...
I tried a lot of tips found on different topics :
- create a course on Garmin Connect and send it to my watch,
- create a course on Openrunner or Platoroute, then import it on garmin connect then send it to my watch,
- create a course on Platoroute, then donwload it in .fit and put it directly on the folder garmin/Newfiles on the watch ,
but I never have turn by turn navigation, only the little red triangle that shows the direction (but is not very accurate to follow a specific route ...) . In the map screen I can see the distance to the finish point but no turn by turn information.

Now I wonder if the turn by turn nav is available on Fenix 5S or only on Fenix 5 and 5X ...

Hope someone can help me, thanks !
  • Yes, the firmware is the same in that respect. Can you share a fit file from plotaroute to check for course points? Obviously not one starting from your home.
  • Hi mcbadger, this is the fit file that I created with platoroute to test the turn by turn navigation near my place.
I created the course on the website, downloaded the .fit file and drag it in the watch in the folder /garmin/Newfiles/

On the watch, I set the activity "run". I only see the distance to the finish point, no turn by turn notification.

    Thanks for your help.
  • I think I understood why this fit file isn't working :
I created the course without selecting the "AUTOPLOT on foot" (I think I was on AUTOPLOT OFF), consequently I suppose that there are no direction informations in the file.

I created another file with AUTOPLOT set on "FOOT", (cf attached file), I will test it on the watch this evening.
  • Yup, you need autoplot on, and in the settings (cogwheel at top right on the plot page) you need generate directions set to Yes.
There are course points (turn warnings) in the second file.
  • The second course made with autoplot on works on the watch!
    Thanks
  • Kind of on topic;

I created a course on my computer (in Garmin Connect) and sent it to my watch (Fenix 5S Plus) and I received nice turn by turn notifications when out running. Very handy when running abroad or in places I've never been before. I especially like the notification which alerts me that I'm off track in the case of missing a turn.

However, when I use the "Saved locations" or "Round-Trip course" options to calculate routes, I never get these turn by turn notifications on the watch. Is the turn by turn notifications somehow limited to courses created on the computer in Garmin Connect?
  • When you create a course on garmin connect or plotaroute, tbt's are created before the course is sent to watch.
I dont think watch create tbt when you create the route on watch.
Deleted the rest. It was 5x answer...
  • Now I did a fex course with platoroute and it works very well with tbt's notifications.

But when I create a course on garmin connect website or when I use the option to auto-calculate route on the website, I never have tbt's notfications, but everyone seems to have it .... There must be something I'm not doing ...
On the website https://connect.garmin.com/ I go in training and then Courses ("Pacours en francais"), then create new course, is there a special option to check to have directions ?
  • Did you get it working with garmin connect?

The only way I got directions working so far on my Fenix 5S, is by creating a route on plotaroute.com, downloading it as a FIT file with turn warnings and manually copying it onto the device via USB mass storage mode. When I create/sync the same route on garmin connect, it just shows the route with total distance to the finish flag, but no turns. Am I missing something?

  • I've contacted Garmin Support a while ago and after some back and forth, it's finally fixed and routes sent from garmin connect to a Fenix 5S contain turn by turn directions
