Maps

Anyway to delete maps from the 5X I'm not using? But be able to put them back when needed.

I have deleted map from the watch and reinstall from garmin Express later.
This is not officially supported from garmin support in my country.

Hope garmin can confirm that reinstall maps is something that is supported, and will be in the future.

I do that all the time:
    - Install maps from Velomap.org to Basecamp
    - Copy using Garmin Mapinstall to the watch, while removing maps not needed for the moment.

Sort of a topic drift, but how does one replace the default route maps that comes with the Fenix 5X? Mine was a gift that was apparently sourced from the UK, because while it has highly detailed European maps installed, the North American maps appear to be simple base maps, not detailed route maps.
  • You need to buy North American maps from Garmin. Or you can use free OpenStreetMaps maps from garmin.openstreetmap.nl or garmin.opentopomap.org.
  • My question is how to determine which file is which region? All of my map file names are like this ‘D6019000A.img'
  • Try GMapTool: http://www.gmaptool.eu/en/content/gmaptool

  • Thanks, pprimoz.

It seems that GMapTool is Windows only, unless you use a command line version in MacOS, but I’m not sure how to do that.

Can I just delete those images from the Garmin folder?
Where do I go to re-download them again — is it just in Garmin Express?
  • Don't delete them , move them somewhere safe and just copy them back when needed

And do not forget to move (backup!) also files with extensions: GMA, SUM & UNL !!!

In fact, it would be wise for each owner to backup whole directory structure with all the files (even hidden ones!) and especially the following (maps related) files:
