I know it was three years ago but did you ever get the powerpod?
I bought the PowerPod Light, and the Garmin Speed Sensor 2, a couple of months ago since I stopped running, wanted to generate VO2max from my road bike. Been using it a fair amount and is working well and consistently. I charge it after I ride as it does lose a little charge sitting for a week or two. The biggest issue is finding the right spot to mount on your bars I routed my cables just perfect and the PowerPod must be clear of the cables, especially so they don't get snagged when turning the bars. It will mount either side. A minor issue. I think a good value. On a MTB the only consideration may be potentially hard drops or rough terrain. The only spike for a power reading I got was hitting a large drainage swale at speed, where power spiked to 1,000 as opposed to around 500. I have been riding some pretty chopped up pavement though and no other odd readings, so may have just been a freak incident. In any case, still a good value and I' give it a shot on my mtb too though just set up for my road bike.
Thanks for the response, John. I have the v4 on its way as we speak. I was wondering about avoiding the cables. I guess we'll see how that goes. Do you have to mount close to the center of the bike? Glad to hear it's been good as well as consistent. I see garmin has come out with a new set of MTB pedals at $1600. That's a hard pass for me lol. Thanks again!
Scott
There is the air tube in the front which monitors wind. That's the only thing they warn about. No need to center up. Mine is a couple of inches to the side about where my bar tape ends and could fit under my cables. The drop for the unit from the clamp is 1.5-2 inches.
Good to know. Thanks again
I have a fenix 5 sapphire edition and a PowerPod BLE (old version). I mainly use it with a mountainbike and it works fine but I had to fine tune the profile using the Isaac software from Velocomp. However, I face frequent drop outs on the fenix 5 regarding power measurements and therefore the power data in Garmin Connect is more or less useless. When looking at the ride files in Isaac everthing is fine. Thats means the transmission of the BLE signal from PowerPod to the fenix 5 does not work reliantly. Importing the ride file via garmin connect is possible. However Garmin only uses data which has been recorded with a garmin device to calculate VO2max for example.
I assume the issue is related to the BLE connection from PowerPod to the fenix 5 because I do not have any issue with any other device connected to the fenix 5 using Ant+. Unfortunately I did not find a way yet to connect the PowerPod BLE using Ant+ to the fenix 5. I assume this would work more reliantly. My plan is to contact Velomcomp regaring that soon. Maybe there is a way to disable BLE and use Ant+ somehow.
I found a way to force an ANT+ connection between PowerPod and the fenix 5. Using BLE only one connection between devices is possible. I connected the PowerPod to my Smartphone using the PowerHouse App. So BLE connection was consumed. Did a sensor scan and suddenly the fenix 5 found the PowerPod via Ant+ but it is shown with name "560". Looking to the info for the sensor I can see software version 6.0.41 which is the latest version for my PowerPod. I will do a ride and see if drop out are gone.. :)
Thanks for the info. This is good to know. I'm going to check the sensors menu on the watch, to see if I can specify BLE or Ant+ connection for each of the sensors. I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of the V4. It's been a few weeks now. It has been shipped but the USPS is a mess...
