Half marathon time

Not sure if this should go in this section as it’s not just on the fenix 5.
On the records 1k to 10k if you run a pr but run extra distance it will still record your pr as you hit that set distance. On the half marathon it takes the time as when you finish not when you hit the half marathon. I have gone a quarter of a mile past and got this issue. It also happened on my forerunner 235.
Has anyone had this issue.
  • Im having the exact same problem. It doesnt seem to record our 21.1k time like you said if you run over the half distance lets say it was 21.4k or over itll record that time (time for whole activity). Has anyone got a fix for this yet??
  • I saw similar behavior while training for my half. I set a pr in a 10, but ran about 6.5 miles that day and the watch didn't give me the pr at the 6.1 distance.

On the other hand I set a pr in the 10k on the day I ran my half (also a PR). When you stop close to the distance it takes the time you stopped as the record.
  • Yeah it has happened a couple of times on my Fenix 5X dont think I had this issue on my Forerunner 235 and yeah always seems to be when you stop close to the distance alright. Has there been a fix for this yet does anyone know??
  • Same problem here with the Fenix 5 Saphire. I ran already twice 21,4 km and it always took the time for the whole 21,4 km as "half-marathon time" instead the fastest 21,1 km segment.
  • In the old Garmin Connect, you could set an activity for the records. Maybe this is still available somewhere?
  • Sure it's still available, but how does it help with the issue? You can only assign the complete activity time as a PR.
  • Yeah its very annoying especially when you get a PB and its always over the actual time you got. Are garmin aware of this issue does anyone know? Or plans for a fix?
  • Whether it is an issue is disputable. I think this might be intentional. Imagine the following example scenario:

You run an official half-marathon race over an IAAF-certified course. You arrive at the finish line and stop your activity. The watch shows 1:42:06 (lets assume it is your PB) and at 21.5 km. This is slightly over the official half-marathon distance, because of GPS inaccuracy and because no one really runs a perfect line over such a long distance. So your official half-marathon time is 1:42:06 and this is what Garmin Connect will consider as your PB. Were it to consider your best time at 21.1 km, the personal record time would be shorter than the official race time.

The above scenario obviously has no application in non-race scenarios.

Anyway my understanding of how it works is as follows. When the distance recorded by the watch is relatively close to half-marathon distance, then the total time of the activity is taken as PB. But when the distance is much longer, then the watch (and/or Garmin Connect) looks for the fastest 21.1 km segment.

This is just my speculation and does not necessarily reflect Garmin's intention. And of course you don't have to like it or agree with it.
