Elevation errors after update to 9.20 from 8.00

After updating from firmware 8.00 to 9.20 recently my watch seems to not record changes to elevation.
Specifically it doesn't seem to notice decent, but it does seem to notice ascent. Which means no matter what, my watch's elevation always seems to go up, and never go down.

This is regardless if I am doing an activity or not.

On 8.00 the automatic detection of ascent and decent worked fairly OK, both while doing activities and also outside of activities.
So this is a change (regression) after updating to 9.20.

Having the exact same elevation issiis on my Fenix 5S since the software upgrade. It seems during an activity once I originally topout on a climb the altitude calculation will freeze. It skips out on coubtcou the elevation gained on any shorter climbs and then will not work for minutes at a time on longer ones. Changes in elevation seem to trigger it freezing - as in when I start deacending. IveI notcied sometimes once I hit the lap reset it will randomly start working again. Not happy and I hope there is a fix soon.

Make sure to let Garmin know about this. I sent feedback and they said another customer had also noticed the issue. If they get more feedback then maybe they will prioritize it.

Same elevation issue on my Fenix 5 when cycling. It is not calculating well over half of my climbing. This only happened since last week or so, when my watch updated to 9.2. Very frustrated. I have emailed Garmin about it at the email address above. Hope they fix it soon. By the way, there is a 9.7 beta out, but I'm actually thinking of rolling back to 8.0 until they sort this out.

Could you try a device reset before downgrading? The backup and restore of the data is very simple, check my previous post about downgrade.
I can confirm that with 8.00 ascent/descent is OK again.

I have an RMA lined up but really don't want to be without my watch for a couple weeks. I tried the newest beta and still have issues so I took your advice and downgraded to 8. We'll see if it helps.
  • I ran with 9.51 and had elevation pretty similar to a friend with tom tom, so did not notice this issue

    did it help?
  • after updating to 9.20 in mountain bike activities total ascent / descent totally incorrect. (verified on known climbs)
  • i have the same problem after updating from 8.10 (watch factory sw) to 9.20, road cycling with 2 device my edge 820 and fenix 5x start/stop same location with old sw i have 5-10 meter difference from both device but after update i around 1/2 of the elevation gain. If edge 820 have 144m elev gain fenix 5x have 70m. Friend fenix 3hr have 150m elevation gain on the same route, phone (strava, endumondo) app have around 140-150m elevation gain
  • another day another try... i now tried all the different baro/altimeter settings. in different locations and conditions. even a soft reset and calibration...

On short climbs which would add around 50m (or did with fw. 8.00) i now get maybe 3-7 meters. that's now usable for a race or to train for hills seriously.
did anyone else report this problem to the garmin crew?
