Does this new activity type allow to set speed/distance in nautical units?
Sadly no. If you go into System --> Units you can change between miles / kilometres or feet / meters but nautical miles or knots are not available. It would be a pretty easy data field to program however.

It is too bad that the official kayak app is so limited. I am now going to try the uPaddle (universal Paddle) app from the store. It looks much better.
I tried uPaddle but the stroke cadence is not working very well. Most of the time it is showing as 0 and sometimes I do get some values. If I look at the graph afterwards it is like it is calculating a stroke value than 2x nothing then again 1 stroke value then again a few times no stroke values etc. I am sure I paddled for long time continuously (I have a goPro video to back this up), so it is not working reliable for me :-(
[EDIT]: Reading on the forum, it looks like the Fenix 5 has a firmware issue that prevents a correct paddle stroke detection. Anyone knows this is true? And any change this will ever be corrected?
If you need cadence, then you need to use SUP activity. I also use Row, SUP, Kayak this’d party activity from Garmin Connect IQ. No issues with cadence from Fenix 5X Plus.
