FW 9.20 - impact to Stages Power Meter connection over Bluetooth?

Hi there,
I recently got a Stages power meter. I've since learned that Stages PM and fenix 5 don't mix well. I also learned that connecting to the PM via bluetooth works much better than over ANT+.

Last week I installed the fenix 5 9.02 beta and it seemed that bluetooth connections to the Stages PM were more stable. The PM and watch seemed to stay connected for most of the rides I went on.

This weekend I installed the 9.20 beta and today I went for my first ride since. No connection at all.

Afer a few minutes of riding I tried deleting the bluetooth PM sensor from the watch and searching again but it only saw the ANT+ PM sensor. No sign of the bluetooth PM id.

If I run the Stages app on my phone it seems to indicate that Bluetooth and ANT+ signals are there (I think - it lists both ANT+ and Bluetooth sensor IDs and shows both symbols).

Anyone got any ideas of what is going wrong? Did something change related to Bluetooth from 9.02 to 9.20?

Thanks in advance,
Andrew
  • I have a stages PM as well and a new Fenix 5 (that I'm not using yet as I just discovered that it's an Asia-Pacific version and I don't know if I'm keeping it or not). I'd like to know the answer to this as well.
  • One of the things with BLE is that it can connect to only one device at a time. So make sure the BT on your phone is turned off (before you 'wake up' Stages), so that it is available to connect to your watch.
  • I got it sorted for the ride home tonight. Here's the voodoo I used (YMMV):

    - Power off watch
    - Remember that I meant to remove the ANT+ power sensor that I added this morning first
    - Start watch
    - Remove ANT+ power sensor
    - Power off watch
    - Start watch
    - Start 'Add new sensors',
    - Remove and replace battery cover on Stages PM to be sure it was awake
    - See the ANT+ power sensor is found
    - Notice a new thing just below "Show bluetooth sensors" (or something like that) (It didn't do that this morning)
    - Click down to the bluetooth list item mentioned above
    - Select it
    - I can't be certain what happened next. I may have double clicked, but I don't recall seeing the Stages BT sensor specifically
    - Anyway, I went back to see the list of sensors and the 'Stages' PM was there. (When it pairs over ANT+ it doesn't say 'Stages')
    - Ride home, mostly connected to PM

So, I'm not sure if my bluetooth problems were #fakenews. Hopefully it won't be a problem next ride.
